How much longer is AGP going to be around?

I'm running a very lopsided rig. I've got a 2200+ with 256 megs of bargain bin memory and a motherboard that doesn't support altering the voltage. So for general performance I'm dead in the water. But I do have a 9800pro. I saw them going for 200 and I thought to myself "They're getting phased out. Buy it now before they're all gone."

What I didn't even stop to consider is that a new line of cards was on the way, (and that an AGP replacement would come with it.)

My question is not, WHAT should I upgrade to but exactly WHEN should I upgrade? or basicallly, how much longer is AGP going to be around?

pciX card is still new to the market well but i think its gonna replace agp but not right now. with the radeon9800pro/xt going so strong that can handle almost every single game, i dont see why i need the x800 in my rig :D

But how fast is AGP going to be forced out of the market? I don't want to wait 6 months to save up for a good upgrade only to find out that the last AGP boards sold out a month before.

Personally I think the prime time for everyone to build a PC is like now... or in a few months for the new video cards. Things are getting cheaper, and new tech is just starting to come out. (64bit, PCI-E, DDR2) that could make things soo much better, but notice how the new things are EXPENSIVE and work just not very well... well wait a year or 2 and they will be at normal prices and most of the "bugs" will be worked out, then time to build again.

But AGP won't die fast...

Okay - it is NOT PCIx or pciX - it is PCIe :) PCIx is a PCi slot that runs on 66mhz / 133mhz and is often in server boards.


Anyways - i say a year and AGP is gone - PCIe came on alot faster then most people thought and intel jumped on it and has boards out already - now the vid card makers need to catch up - but i say by summer next year AGP will be gone

Also companies like Dell are already selling PCIe systems.

I give it a year or so as well. Although, we aren't even using AGP 8x's full potential yet, people will still hop on the PCIe bandwagon. Pretty much why I have been pondering whether to upgrade yet or not :)

AGP wont be mainstream for too long. But there will still be AGP PCs floating around so there will be SOME AGP cards after PCIe becomes the norm.

Think of it like so: Soon, AGP cards will be to PCIe cards what PCI video cards are to AGP cards now. Not many of them, and not nearly as fast as PCIe. I would think that perhaps the next batch of new cards will be released with an AGP option and probably at most one new batch after that.

woulda been cool to see an AGP/PCIe Hybrid connector with a changable mode. Stick an AGP card in it and it switches to AGP mode. Stick a PCIe card in it and it will switch to PCIe mode. Eh eh?

I would think the first few PCIe chipsets would be AGP compatible as well, not sure. But I think they would have two seperate slots.

I really need to read into PCIe actually because I know the slots are different and stuff..
