Hello guys, I'm new to AMD processors and I'm going to use one in my next system. I've gone to a couple of websites and they sell Tbirds of same speed with a different FSB speed next to it(?).
Example: Tbird 1000(200mhz) $97.00
versus Tbird 1000(266mhz) $90.00

Can someone tell me:
1) what the numbers mean
2) which processor is better for O/C
3) why the price difference

All help is appreciated.

The 200MHz CPU is for use in older boards that do not fully support a 266MHz Front side bus. The 266 runs on the faster 266MHz front side bus, but will not run properly on older 200 MHz motherboards, like the Abit KT-7 and Asus A7V. The 200MHz CPU will always work with the 266 boards, though.

It's AMD's equivalent to the Pentium III running at two specs - the slower ones for use on legacy boards with the 100FSB, and the newer CPUs for new chipsets at 133FSB.

If it's 1GHz CPUs alone you're talking about, you have to look at the stepping - it's a serial number printed on top of the CPU die. If it contains AXIA or AVIA, they will be good overclockers. Most people get at least 1.3GHz with these. If it contains a completely different serial number like ADFA or AHFA, they won't run as high. These older revisions can usually be found on the 200mHz Thunderbirds running at 1GHz or below. My Thunderbird 800 is an ADFA, and it won't boot above 1050 MHz.

The price differential is created when an older CPU like the 1GHz (200) becomes a replacement part for old computers, instead of a part that is often used in new computers, like the (266) CPUs. There tends to be more demand for replacements for older broken parts instead of the demand for new ones. You'll note that a lot of old (450-600) MHz Pentium IIIs are now relatively expensive, considering their obsolesence.

Hope I clarified this instead of confused you. Post more ?s if you have them!
