View Full Version : FREE MONEY for all TORONTO people!
I hope that headline got your attention. I'm gonna give you all something (not free money) and I'd appreciate a little something back but it isn't required.
Here's the give: We've all seen the pictures of the cool fans with the LED's in 'em by now and we've all seen the specs for that 235cfm fan going for $9 in the states, right? I know a place where you can get just about anything under the surplus sun in Toronto, computer parts or otherwise, and the prices are usually very good. I told someone in a private message about it but I figured I might as well share it with everyone. Lemme take time to state clearly I don't work at this place I'm about to name nor do any of my friends nor am I gonna get paid for this by anyone so I hope this isn't considered advertising. The place is called "Active Surplus", its address is 345-347 Queen st. West in Toronto. Its just west of the Much Music building on the south side of the street, there is usually a manequin wearing a gorilla suit propped up out front of the place so its easy to find. I recommend it to everyone in the G.T.A. who's looking for anything computer related thats surplus. Check it out you'll probably save yourself some money.
Here's the take (if your willing): I'm thinking of going there to get some fans to try that LED trick. I just called them and asked what their price on fans for computer cases was and the guy said $5. Usually they know exactly what they are doing there, they aren't like radio crap, but this guy was vague about the fans and I'm not sure I'm willing to trust his statement (although $5 Canadian for an 80mm fan would not surprise me from this place). I don't actually live in T.O. and getting there is a bit of a chore for me so if anyone in T.O. goes there to look around could you write down a few prices on fans (with size, voltages, etc) and private message them or email them to me. Thanks.

Not me, whats that all about sounds cool.
Look for the thread called "Shweet LED on fan mod!". You'll know the coolness once you follow the links from there.
Do they have a web-site?
or
I live in Mississauga, so I guess I could visit them sometime....

Yeah but its crap, absolute crap. I've emailed them twice only to get my messages returned. But they are a good source for non-new, non-high end stuff. Next time you're in the core do yourself a favor and check them out.
hmm... thats interesting... it really is...
still, its a chore for me also... from Buffalo, NY
but sounds worth a trip sometime soon.
thank you for the info!
the thread about the fans is in topic: alternative modding
I don't know if I'd go from that far but if you've got another reason to be in Toronto, or even if you're just going to Hamilton, I think it'd be worth your time to detour there.
yea... but US funds make the fans $2.50
but indeed, i'd like to plan to take in a few other things... even just the sights of TO can make the day worthwhile tho.

It's waiting for you in your private message box. It's one of the few things you can actually find out from their web site.
Hey eobard i live close enough to walk there i'll head down there this weekend
Forgot to ask what size fans u want i ain't gonna document every single thing.
it would be great if you'd describe, in general... the stores contents and pricing... like, whats usefull, what caught your eye...
and how you feel the prices and quality rate.
thanks for being close :)
and thanks for posting your findings too, much appreciated!

It'd be super great if I could name everything they've got! Don't expect to find cpu's or too much modern parts. Stuff thats almost obsolete or barely obsolete is in plenty. In the past I've bought several used b&w 14"vga monitors, a used color vga monitor, several keyboards both used and surplus new, used floppy drives both 360k and 1.44m, a used hard drive (420mb for $10 Canadian a year ago), a used cd rom (X4 speed $4 Canadian), cases, power supplies, all kinds of bits and pieces. Much of their stuff is AS IS but I've rarely bought something that didn't work. The only stuff I've had problems with was the color vga monitor, the transformer blew after 4 days, I returned it under 30 day warranty and they fixed it the same day (but I had to loiter around in downtown T.O. all day in February!) and the X4 cd rom which was "AS IS" and didn't work, $4 Canadian, big loss! I should have bought 3, I'm sure at least one would have worked! $12 for a cd rom for a backup computer would have been worth it in my opinion. Also they sell Lexan sheets by weight at a good price if anyone is thinking of making a clear case or a window for their case.
I know a place that's kinda like Active Surplus it's called Above All electronics that place has all the parts needed to make a computer.

Yah thats a great place, that smelly gorilla has been there for ages. You're right, you can find just about anything 'older' there including av stuff and components of all kinds. I especially like the cheap tools, cabling and odds and ends. I could browse in there the whole day.
The other place mentioned Above All Electronics, is that at Bathurst and Bloor? That is a wild store as well. They have literally thousands of items to look at. The computer stuff is slightly newer but you can still get 2m vga cards for 5.00 bucks as well as nic cards for 5.00 and fans, and wow fans galore, all types and 5.00 to 9.00 bucks. I love this place, there is a bunch of used 15" and 17" monitors crowding the entrance to this shop. I love checking out every aisle.

yeah thier is a place like that in Vancouver (Canada), its called computer-surplus , i call it the computer graveyard. Stuff you find thier is 1 step from bing trash.... and sometimes it is. Fans like you were talking about are $2.50 12V any amp any size... got bins full of them.. quality is another concern though...
They are used and may die soon.
Found a slot 1 board thier... bought it and was dead.. they gave me my money back so.... all is good.
Any one got an extra Slot 1 to sell?
But rember used stuff is USED aka (posibly) end of its life span

Gotta move this to Vendor Discussion. I'll leave the redirect though.
Fair enough, although it really should go in the "FREE MONEY for all TORONTO people!" section. I know its around here somewhere... :)

sorry ppl i got caught up this weekend even tho i'm close to the store and when i said i could walk there i meant in an hour. I'll to head down there sometime soon.
