i'm new at this and i'm not a computer wiz but i read the guide on the site and i want to know can you overclock with just the stuff that came with the computer and still have a pretty stable system or do i have to spend a little cash to do this?
my system specs are pretty weak
gateway
celeron 733mhz
64mb pc-133 ram(will upgrade soon 128 or more)
voodoo2 creative (will upgrade soon...maybe geforce 3)
windows ME (blah!)
i think FSB was somewhere in the 60 mhz
i know i probably need to give more info but i cant get hwdiag to work(if it does anything at all) so just tell me how to get it and i will.
heres the stuff i got out of system info
OS Name Microsoft Windows
Version 4.90.3000 Build 3000
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Name 0022451836
System Manufacturer Gateway
System Model Not Available
System Type X86-based PC
Processor Intel(r) Celeron(tm) processor GenuineIntel ~731 Mhz
BIOS Version
Windows Directory C:\WINDOWS
Locale United States
Time Zone Eastern Daylight Time
Total Physical Memory 62.20 MB
Available Physical Memory 244.00 KB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.84 GB
Page File Space 1.94 GB
Page Refresh Type Automatic
Temporary Internet Files Folder C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files
Total Disk Space 19083 MB
Available Disk Space 10928 MB
Maximum Cache Size 200 MB
Available Cache Size 169 MB
pay no attention to the 731mhz and 62 mb ram cause its wrong, actually most of the memory stuff is wrong.
also if anyone can make it simpler on how to overclock that would be great....i'm a little nervous when it comes to messing with anything on that menu.

Well you probally can overclock you 733 to 913 easy at 83fsb. Enter you bios at start-up and try to change you fsb up a little. If you see an option to +33mhz or -33 mhz on you ram you should select +33 to get more out of your pc-133. Now it accually not running any faster than a stick of pc-66 would. You should invest in ram now while its cheap, it seems that your system was running low on ram in the spec you gave and ram is the cheapest upgrade for speed. Go to pricewatch.com for cheap ram prices.

Hello! My suggestion to you is the following. First overl**** the computer in small ammounts and then 3dmark2000. if you do nopt have this, get it online. it is free. keep overl****ing with original heat sink & fan that computer came with. If you get realy far with original heat sink & fan, your lucky. If you get far but not as far as you wanted it to get, I would suggest getting the sk-6 heat sink and fan. It is only 35 dollars and when I got it, it was 70. Ouch for me. With that cooling system, you should get to at least 1000 mhz and probably close to 1,200mhz. If you can get to 850 or so with original heat sink and fan and see a big difference and dont feel like spending the extra cash, then fine. that's cool! If you want to get the most out of your system though, get the sk-6 heat sink with the delta 38cfm fan option. I have to warn you it is loud but just blast those mp3's lol! good luck! if you have any questions, e-mail me at greenwalk50@hotmail.com

ps:thanks for the help:)i plan to upgrade the ram to an extra 128mb or maybe 256 if i can shake a few dollars off the new 3d card.windows ME cant use ddr ram can it?

Bad satan. 83mhz FSB is bad most PCI cards will fizzle out at that speed and you won't boot the system. Most of the time its the Vid card.
Now misfit you have a gateway and they aren't the best board for overclocking.Wait change that most big name computer places Dell Compaq...ect suck. They lock the user down the way they want to. If you overclock you will viod your warranty also you can burn things up. The best tip I can tell you is to go to some place like plycon and buy a Sk-6 heatsink with a delta 80mm fan high output. Also you will need an adapter for the fan and some Artic silver2 thermial compound. Now then this is going to run you about $60 or a little bit more but its better than frying a CPU and never buy an ORB(They really suck). Once you get the new heatsink on be careful and don't crack the core. You can start on your way to overclocking.
I hate to tell you that its going to cost you that much just to Overclock but hey some of us spend close to 4 grand on a system before its all over.
I just priced everything you will need and here its is:
Qty Description Unit Amount
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 Globalwin CAK-38 Copper Socket Cooler $36.99 $36.99

1 Delta 80mm Fan Tail-less $20.99 $20.99
Weight: 0.40 lbs each
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2 5 Universal Fan Screws $1.00 $2.00
Weight: 0.10 lbs each
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 Arctic Silver II Grease $8.99 $8.99

Total Shipment Weight: 1.50 lbs Subtotal: $86.95
Sorry to hit the wallet so hard man but look at it this way once you buy this stuff then you are all set untill you go athlon or watercooling. All the stuff I have picked is top of the line and worth every penny but if you want to price these things even more then look them up on pricewatch.com

good god!i think i'll wait and get a good 3d card and more ram till i can save up the money for a nice alienware pc.
ps:are there any geforce 2's or 3's that are pci and work well?
i dont think i have any agp slots.

Being that that system is new it would most likely has an APG bus on it. I don't see how you can spend $250-$400 and not want good cooling for your system. You could overclock it but you wont get much out of it. What I am talking about doing will get you the max Oc without watercooling. IMO you might not even have to spend a lot on a new Vid card if you OC because you will be pushing the APG bus even higher than what it runs at so you will be getting better preformance out of that Vid card in some cases I pull 38fps on a TNT2 16meg card playing Unreal T.
Its up to you what you want to do on this but cooling is something you have to have when you overclock if you don't then you tend to burn things up like the CPU

i looked at the specs of my pc with hwinfo32 and under apg it says 0,all i have is 4 pci slots.i just wanted to know if i could overclock because well its something new to me and i wanted to see if i could do it.
the reason i want a good 3d card is not so much as speed as it is looks.
Voodoo 5500 would probably be best.
They make a gf mx for pci but it does not work as well as the voodoo pci cards.

hey!!! I would also go with the voodo 5. I have it and I can't say anything bad. It is awsome. Very good! get that! The Gefroce 3 is a little too expensive and the geforce 2 in my opiion, is no difference then the voodo 5. get th voood0 5
I think probably the best way is to spend some money just a little
here goes my list of nice pieces for your pc:
Cel 733Mhz bus66Mhz this you alredy got it and it will do ;)
A nice mainboard good for overclocking like a asus cusl2-c and it's really stable too, really easy to flash the bios and you can get really nice tweaked bios you can got at www.x86-secret.com !!!( i got one of those)
At least 256Mb ram cas 2 133Mhz ( crucial it's the best, you can put your ram bus at +/- 157Mhz it really helps overclocking )
I think a GeForce 2/GeForce 2 Ultra will be great for you a GeForce 3 it's to expensive and and you won't get all of it you need at least a 1Ghz cpu!! :(
Win Me sucks for gamers but if you want a stable overclocked system probably you will have to work with it :( with luck you probably will have a nice stable system with Win98 SE...
About the overclocking i think you can easly get 935, bus @ 85Mhz, v.core 1.70, PCI=28.33Mhz!!!
And a nice cpu cooler like Gladiator Original it rock's!!!!
Good luck!!!!

I agrea on the Vid cards the Geforce 2 Ultra is one tight card.
Yea but at that 85mhz bus you can run into a problem because you have to figure your APG bus also it can run out of spec without a APG/PCI bus adjuster in the bios of the board.
I say that with good cooling you might be able to do 100mhz FSB which would put you out at somewhere just above 1.1 and some change. Because the mult is strange its something like 11.111 or 11.21111. Rather weird but I think with good case cooling a sweet heatsink with a nice high cfm rateing you might just be able to do that. Although you are going to need a good board. Something that will give you all the extras. I'm soon to be getting an Iwill I have never had one so I am not going to say go buy one but I have had many Abit boards. Their a rather nice Overclockers board but I have herad for sometime that their on the out and out so I might want to try Asus if I was you

Im fairly sure if you want a small overclock changing the FSB to 75 will work without any extra cooling.
Ambient's kinda going for the extreme o/c there and to be safe.
Which is good. But celerons are not a hot chip so I wouldnt worry about it man.
ps. Vidcard=Radeon Le :)

Unless you can get SoftFSB to work on your system, you will be unable to overclock your system. Your BIOS disallows any adjustment to the front-side bus speed. Your motherboard has onboard AGP, and no AGP slot, so to use anything based on a GeForce, you are out of luck. Changing the heatsink is all well and good, but without the abiity to change your bus speed, it is wasted effort.
You could probably use everything that is in your computer, and just replace the motherboard and buy a video card. Consider it your next upgrade. $200 and you will have a fully upgradeable computer that will be able to be tweaked for a couple of years.

Tell that to my 633 which I scorched the core on. I had it very punched up but I only had a volcano/// heatsink. Its ok for stock on any intel or p/// untill your cross over the 900 mark then your just screwed.
I do think it had a lot to do with my tekram board I hate it.

I would suggest a Radeon VE. It's similar to the $179 radeon but had a few luxury features taken off, like the emotion engine.
Its very fun to play with dual display. It has 32 megs of 350mhz drr ram and about 180mhz clock. I got mine for $60 for full retail version. Better than my old GeForce 256.
As for a new board you might as well go for a good one if you want. I bought a cheap acorp board because it was said to go up to 1400Mhz stable, but it lacks hardware monitoring.
