Well, here's the gaming rig that I'm building for college/everquest 2. I'm just going to post a link to it on newegg as it is most convenient and lists all specs. Let me know what you guys think.

Very nice, have you considerred yet going from IDE to SATA instead? If you're getting that nice of a computer, spend the extra few and go SATA, you don't have to go for a Raptor by any means, but it's another bump in speed.

I suppose I could go SATA...could you recommend a nice SATA drive? Thanks for the comments, guys.
Awesome System. The absolute best SATA Drive out there at the moment is the 74 Gig WD Raptor (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-160&depa=1).
For a cheaper option, the Hitachi 7k250 Deskstar (ranging from 40-250 gigs) is a very nice option, and is the 2nd fastest SATA drive out there. Furthermore, the Hitachi 7k400, is there as well. This is basically the same as the 7k250, except its available only in a 400 gig size.

I noticed a problem. If you are going to get a socket 940 FX, you need registered ram. THe ram you have in there now wont work. If you want to use it, you need to get a socket 939 FX and motherboard. However, I believe OCZ and maybe other ram companies came out with low-latency (Albeit expensive) registered ram.

why the DVD burner and cd burner. the dvd burner can burn cds, allbeit slower than the drive you have but, it'll do it. Other than that nice rig

hell year, wish i had that kind of money to upgrade for EQ2. im slowly and gradually upgrading for that game too. getting a PSU soon probably, followed by another stick of 512ram, and then still up in the air on Graphics card. i think i will wait until after launch because since EQ2 is supported by Nvidia, it will be interesting to see how it runs on their cards, considering how Doom 3 is now (not to mention there is no release date except 2004, so by the time it is release, this generation of cards might go down in price hopefully). I also think PS3.0 will make a big difference in EQ2, but only time will tell.

You can't get much better than that for the price. That can run anything out right now.
Go for it.
College and Everquest 2....aren't they mutually exclusive? :P Other than that...nice rig.

Yeah, sorry to kill it, but it's not gonna work :-/
You need more expensive RAM (registered) for it to work.
EDIT: Get THIS RAM:

It's not gonna work if you don't.

Another vote for dumping the CD burner.......

Yeah, you need Registerd RAM(Beating a dead horse here) and I think you should get a 200gig Cuda V for storage. Because 120 doesnt really cut it anymore. Not for me anyways :p
Or...you can get me a cuda V if you want. :D

Ah, thanks for the info on the RAM.....I will add that registered ram to the wishlist. And I'll think about going SATA....but is the speed increase really worth it? Is it very noticeable? Thanks again.

I would recomend that you get a socket 939 setup instead. You will get better performance over the socket 940 because it does not require registered RAM.

I would also suggest the 74g raptor, as it really moves, and I agree with above, you don't need the extra drive. otherwise, rockin sys!!
for ram look at the corsair xms. Thats what im running ad im very happy with it. I just wish i had gotten the 1 gig dual channel kit

K...AFAIK, SATA HDD's are no faster than ATA133 drives except for the WD raptors. They use the same plates and headers as IDE drives (cept the raptors which use SCSI plates...which is why there faster), the SATA is merely the medium of data travel...
in other words, your getting the same car with a max speed of say 80 mph (totaly arbitrary and saying it's gonna be faster if you drive it on a road with 120 mph speed limit than on a road with an 100 mph speed limit.
My suggestions:
Get a 74gb raptor! It's actualy faster than those 7200rpm SATA and PATA drives! (if you don't wanna plunge on the raptor stick with your current drive, the only benefit of SATA for those is a neater cable)
drop the lite-on burner and get a strait up DVD-ROM because they read much faster than burners and combo drives. and your DVD+-RW will burn CD's
Make sure your burner is a dual layer DVD burner (I'm not sure if it is or isn't, head on over to www.dvdrhelp.com for info on that stuff)
go socket 939 and a 3800+ (2.4ghz), it's faster than the FX-51 and cheaper, and doesn't require registered RAM
Linky to a 3800+ 939 vs a FX-53 S940 (they are on par...so a FX-51 is only gonna be slower):
http://www.sharkyextreme.com/hardware/cpu/article.php/3261_3361881__2
So of course your gonna need a new mobo..I'm not up to par on those, so your gonna have to find out about that....But this will give you more performance, and a cheaper price, you can't go wrong!
on the same note as what ajrettke said about getting the 3800 instead of the fx-51, from what ive been reading in tests, the fx-51 did not overclock extremely well(most ive talked to that have actualy tried had some serious heat issues). if your gonna spring for the fx chip i would go with the 53 not the 51. if im not mistaken you can get the fx-53's in 939 now.
