I was wondering if anyone has ever come across an all silver heatsink? I mean silver is only around $2 an ounce and it does out perform copper. Just wondering.... thats all.

i dont think it absorbs as much heat as copper like take a lighter to a silver necklce and it will melt and copper wont. well it didnt with my experiment anywayz

Noise Control makes an hsf called the silverado. The heatsink is made of solid silver and the fan is supposed to be super quiet, hence Noise Control :D You can check out some performance tests on it at tomshardware, with about 46 other hsf's. It performs pretty good. I was about to buy one, but decided to just go with the big swifty.

nickel is also super conductive. that would be an interesting material to use

Silver is one of the best conduits for thermal retension and aluminum aloy is best to actually disipate the heat once absorbed by the silver.
One of these days I will post some pics of my Swiftech mc1000 with a 3 millimeter Silver baseplate mod, in the meantime here's some Metal thermal properties

Thermal Properties of Materials
Thermal Conductivity, W/cm-K
Metals
Aluminum 2.165
Beryllium 1.772
Beryllium-copper 1.063
Brass 70%
Copper 3.937
Gold 2.913
Iron .669
Platinum .734
Copper 3.937
Silver 4.173

Liquid Nitrogen is yet the best method to cool ur CPU
COOL and silent
but anyone know how to set it up???

but anyone know how to set it up??? I do, I can build just about anything, if I have the finances(which rarely happens).

But having to run and get more liquid nitrogen about once a week(and it would take a heap of the stuff to go that long) isn't too practicle.

hehe ok,
have u ever tried it??

No but I built my own mechanical fuel injection system for a small-block chevy once. That doesn't sound too hard, but I didn't mention yet that it used propain not gasoline.

O rite
so how'z the outcome ??

I have a liquid nitrogen generator. It pulls nitrogen from the air adn pow you have an unlimited amount of cooling as long as you have air! thing is huge and noisey but would be cool to play with sometime. maybe mod a g3 to cool taht too. I bet the electric bill running that thing would kick my a$$!

might do it just to get a killer 3dmark 2001.

Might only make gas not totally sure because the thing would be hard to make N2 taht cold now that I think of it.

where'd u get that nitrogen generator??
and what do u classify as huge and noisy??
compared to my CAK38 is it alot louder or bout the same??

One of the toys we play with at work are liquid Helium compressors. That's right, charge them up once and they run for a year or so and get you another 70 degrees colder then liquid nitrogen :D

If only I could figure out an easy way of getting the signals out without heat flow to the liquid helium bath ....

so how'z the outcome ?? It worked pretty good. My first prototype used a single barrel valve built on to the throttle butterfly, but I had problems with that freezing up when the propane vaporized. So I redesigned it with a cam on the throttle butterfly that actuated linkage that actuated a needle valve in each injector. The final result was one kick-A system, the customer really liked it too (I build performance engines and such)!

It's not all silver, here's a 50 gram (1½ oz) coin shaped silver plate at the bottom of the heatsink. The rest is aluminium.

You are absolutely right. I stand corrected. I'd been talking to some friends about making a solid silver heatsink and was in dreamland :)

specs: thermal conductivity & density

Aluminum: 2.37 W/cmK 2.702 g/cm³
Gold: 3.17 W/cmK 19.32 g/cm³
Copper: 4.01 W/cmK 8.96 g/cm³
Silver: 4.29 W/cmK 10.5 g/cm³

Seems to me even though silver may be the best conductor of heat it is also pretty heavy. I figure to make a cold plate alone with silver at the current prices it'll cost around $15-$18 @ approx. 5-6 oz. No wonder aluminum is the prefered heatsink when comparing it's weight and price per oz.

A silver coldplate that is 50 millimeters x 50 millimeters x 3 mill(1/8 inch thick) weighs 3 ounces. I know I make them;)

PS if you know where I can get 5-6 ounces of silver for $15-18 I'll buy a truckload

there is a heatsink called the silver mountain, it is a copper heatsink coated in silver but the main reason for this is to fill in gaps to improve conductivity (if there is such a word)

I was writing that note kinda of quick and not thinking about the actual price times the amount used. It was just a quick guess and I was falling asleep at the keyboard.
I should of thought it out better for i buy gold and silver coins. Here is an updated conversion:

my copper cold plate=
40mm X 40mm X 6mm = 9600 cubic mm =
9.6 cubic cm

density of silver = 10.5 g/cubic cm

apply to the same size copper cold plate as mentioed above:
100.8 grams of silver

convert grams to ounces= grams / 28.47 = ounces

apply to amount of silver mentioned above:
3.54 oz.

current price (8/27/2001) of silver in us dollars=
$4.18 / ounce

apply amount of silver needed for cold plate X cost/oz=
$14.80
