Recently I bought a sound-proofing kit. However I have two questions:

1. Where do I put this material in the case? The kit has two types of sound-proofing material: one designed to prevent fan noise and the other to prevent structure vibrations. The computer case (apart from at the back) has only one vent on the left side.

2. Is it safe to put this material around the power supply? As this covers the vents of the power supply would this procedure possibly count as "modding" the computer's power supply? I have read that "modding" your power supply actually may possibly invalidate house insurance and that is not a likeable situation.

Depending on the sound proofing stuff, there are various ways to use it.

If its the stuff from Noise Killer or Noise Control, or in general the fabric based sound proofing, what you do is glue it to the inside of the case where there are bare metal areas. (duhhh.. kinda hard to explain.. but for example, at the bottom of the case is a large flat area of metal, which causes sound to "bounce" off back into the case.. if you add the sound prrofing material here, it will absorb the sound instead of letting it bounce)

So basically what you want to do is cover as many large flat areas inside your case as possible.

There is one rule of thumb, FABRIC CONTAINS HEAT, which essential means, that you must NEVER use it on sources creating heat.

DO NOT cover the harddisks or CD drives, DO NOT cover the PSU or vents / fans where the air needs to get in and out. ONLY bare flat areas that cause sound to bounce.

Feel free to PM me if you need further help...

Cheers, Flix

when I put my case together I didnt buy that expensive case sound proofing crap.. I went to Home Depot, got myself some really short haired industrial carpeting (with rubber bottom) and used contact cement to attach it to just about every wall of the inside of the case. Man did my case quiet down! Just make sure not to have the carpet/sound proofing material touching your mobo or other components.. then youd be fine.

That is a very cool idea I'm going to have to remember that one.
