View Full Version : My linux box: will it work?
I just dropped $200 getting an old computer useable, and i want to be sure that Mandrake 8 will work on it. Here's what I got:
Supermicro P6SBA mobo
PIII 500MHz
128MB RAM (mixed generic)
Soundblaster 16
Netgear FA311 10/100 NIC
Maxtor 20GB HDD
Hi-Val 52X cd-rom
FMI 3.5" 1.44MB floppy drive.
Voodoo 3 3000
Will I run into any driver conflicts with this setup? I got everything as common and plain jane as I could, just to be on the safe side.
Looks like you should be in good shape. Except for the mobo I have all of the other parts in your list and all of them work in Linux.
WOO HOO! Thanks Ken! I didn't think I'd run into any problems, since they're all generic/common parts. I'm just a Linux virin and plan on poppin' my cherry this weekend. Wanted to make sure i'd have no hardware issues.

It looks like its posting day for me ;). Everything looks good. The types of hw you need to be on the lookout for to be compatible with linux are graphics cards, winmodems, some sound cards, and thats usually about it. USB stuff is another iffy. Check http://www.linux-usb.org for stuff like that. And groups.google.com is your friend. Go to advanced searrch and look in *linux* newsgroups to see how ppl are faring with the hw you are trying to get to work.
You can get some Winmodems to work. I got my Intel Ambient HaM working. Check out www.linmodems.org

Sounds a little better than my K6-2 300 box.... have you had trouble getting the Netgear card to work? I've tried mandrake 8.0 as well and cant seem to get either of two different NIC's to work with it(even after reading the instructions!). I'm gonna switch to Red Hat tonight and see if it can get things working....
