Hello, Ive been noticing BIG slow downs in GTA3 whenever I drive by (not shooting) trees. I have temporal AA on 2x and AF 2x and it lags BIG TIME. It goes from about 75FPS to about 15-30. Its rediculous, I turn AA and AF off and it runs perfectly. GTA3 isn't a eye candy game so how is it hard for my 9800 pro to process poorly arranged pixels in a form that is supposed to be trees? I dont get it. Ive changed drivers and everything... What do you think my problem is?

It's a really patchwork engine they run in both GTA3 and VC. Make sure to turn the "frame limiter" (or something like that) on in the settings, see if that helps.

Bottom line: it's the game, not your hardware.

yeah most definately the game.

Check if there are any patches for the game.

I think when I played vice city I had to patch it...

I turned off frame limiter and I have frame sync on because it limits it to 75FPS which looks really smooth. I will look for some updates and if that dosn't help... then... Ill just have to live with lag :).

I ran vice city with similar settings and the same video card half a year ago...

Worked great!

You should not have to live with that problem! :(

This may help.

- delete from the "Grand Theft Auto Vice City/models" directory the files "TXD.DIR" and "TXD.IMG" (if they exist)
- delete from the "Grand Theft Auto Vice City/data" directory the file "CAPS.DAT"
- delete from the "Documents and Settings/Current logged-in User/My Documents/GTA Vice City User Files" directory the "GTA_VC.SET" file.

Then run the game and reconfigure your video options.

Look for a file similar to the GTA_VC.set located in your "My Documents\GTA3\" folder and delete it (should have a .set extension). It contains the video card settings that were detected when the game was first installed. It will redetect the video card the next time you run the game.

Also check out the support site.

Here is a screen shot were I get pretty bad slow downs. This is one of the worst spots. I just dont get it. I tried updating the game and nothing. Do you think its a conflict with the ATi catalyst 4.7?

No this really is a widespread problem with gta3. It did this on my ti4200 and then later on my 9800Pro. I fixed it by turning the frame limiter on and vsync on. Note though that vice city did not have these problems for me. You should pick up vice city, it was overall a better game than gta3 was anyway.
