View Full Version : use polish with lapping???
I keep reading different things, some say use polish with lapping others say no because it messes with the silver goop.
I'm gettin ready to lap mine and I don't want to do anything to mess it up.
I do have some mothers aluminum polish and i could get a real nice shine with it.....
need input, first time lapper:)

I used mothers polish but then cleaned the heatsink base with alcohol then did a straight buffing with a lint free cloth.. The Artcic Silver site mentions:
"Never use any oil or petroleum based cleaners (WD-40, citrus based cleaners and many automotive degreasers) on the base of a heatsink. The oil, which is engineered to not evaporate, will fill in the microscopic valleys in the metal and significantly reduce the effectiveness of any subsequently applied thermal compound."
Since i was using Artic Silver 2 I made sure I got all the polish off before I did the deed and placed it on the CPU :)

Anything that I lap gets polished. I use a dremel and jewelers rouge thought. It's harder to clean off, but it's worth it in the long run.
I don't put polish on my lapped surfaces just to play the safety.
My 2 cents.
How much of a temp drop have you seen with lapping,
I've been told to expect anywere from 2-5*C is that realistic???
