View Full Version : waiting for barracuda 7200.8 ?!

Hi.
I guess I'm doomed. Both of my drives (6 year old deskstar and 2 year old maxtor) are failing, and reading errors and reboots occur more often with every day... (when I decreased ram to 512MB my system reboots every 5 minutes)
I need a new Harddisk.. with 160GB ,S-ATA and 7200 rpm.
I like smooth drives like the seagate, but why should I get the last generation, when the new one is on its way?
So first question: did anyone see a release date for the 7200.8 series?
Second question: is it just dumb to wait for these drives, because there are some other drives performing very well? Which one would you recommend? the 7200.7, or maybe a Hitachi? (I liked my deskstar ;) ).
I'm not rich, so I need a drive to last some years, while providing high performance.
I didn't get any smarter while reading other threads, because anyone suggests the drives he's using (if they work at least) .. gonna search for some benchmarks maybe.
Little question out of the thread: Do they still call their drives e.g. 160GB while it really has 160000 MB = 156,25GB?
Thank you.

edit: according to storagereview.com the barracuda 7200.7 wins almost every test over comparable drives. Would it make sense, to get one of these?
