My ex boss is moving out of state, and still wants me to administer his machine from my home, the question is can it be done over the net? or just long distance modem to modem?
This guy has been a very good foreman, and I would like to help him out any way I can.
Can it be done without PC-Anywhere?
Thanks in advance.
OOPS! almost forgot the os is XP pro.
Depending on just what kind of administration you need to do with his machine you could just use the remote desktop feature in XP.

PC anywhere does work. I find that the remote desktop feature in xp pro is much faster. Either way to do it effectively broadband is almost a must.

You could use VNC, but you would want to also consider securing it if necessary as it normally sends everything unencrypted. We use VNC here at work a lot and it works well with connections of decent speed.

vnc if you have system resources to waste, remote desktop if you need multisession and seamless intergration

I just switched from VNC to remote desktop to admin my 2k servers. I did a little test, comparing VNC vs RD. Doing simple admin tasks such as starting up programs like AV and backup, adding users, admining websites/ftp sites.
I used NetstatLive from AnalogX to monitor the BW and CPU usage and found that VNC typically used around 4k of bw and 15% cpu. RD used around 1k of bw and 3% cpu. Both of those readings were taken while moving windows around and what not. Needless to say, I use RD now.
Just my .02 cents worth.

Looks like I'm gonna have to brush up a little on RD...never done it b4, but in XP I hear it is almost id10t proof.
Edit: OOPS! almost forgot to say Thanks.
