I know there's a possibility this could be a Windows error, but I posted here in the event that it was a hardware issue. It's happened to me two times on two different installs of XP Pro on my Maxtor 7200 ata133 160GB (NTFS).

Anyone know how/why this error occurs? CHKDSK reports it. CHKDSK /f (on reboot), Maxblast, and Norton will not fix this (among other utility programs I tried the first time - can't remember). The only thing that does fix it is a clean install - yet I still believe that it's a problem with the drive itself. All other data is fine.

I was tile editing a sega CD version of NHL94 when this happened again yesterday. I don't remember what I was doing the first time, but I know it was different. I believe it was also something "windows intensive" but there was no crash in either case. Just a reboot.

It's a real pain, because the boot hangs for about 10 seconds after the logon/welcome screen, directly after the logon sound. After that, everything works fine.

- Hope someone knows - thanks for reading.

You might want to try running the Maxtor PowerMax diagnostic utility on the HDD if you haven't already...

Yeah, I tried Powermax and everything is reported ok.

I'm going to try one of the fixes listed on the second link. Thanks for your help!
