i have a friend with a newer dell computer that is pretty well infected with spyware and search bars. i've used hijackthis, ad-aware, and spybot s&d and gotten rid of everything i could recognize as obvious malware, but there are still problems, and im guessing there will be a bunch more programs installed when i check it again. if anyone could tell me what to fix and or how to fix it i would appreciate it.

the main problem that is frustrating me is that the task manager opens for a second and then dissapears, so to delete any active processes i have to go into safe mode. heres a hijackthis log after i ran spybot s&d, adaware, and hijackthis and got rid of everything i recognized:

Boy you got a ton in there! I dont have time this second, but, I would reboot in safe mode with networking, disable system restore, get the latest updates to ad-aware, spybot and download CWShredder. Run them all until they all come up clean. then install spywareblaster and update it.

good suggestion. cwshredder is a good program as well as adaware and spybot. I found bulletproofs spyware destroyer awesome, the bad thing is when it cleaned it wiped out something i needed. But it worked i had to reinstall mobo drivers for my network, but other than that it was awesome

You should stick to just spybot, adaware, CWShredder, spywareblaster, and Hijackthis. These programs do their job well without doing any other damage. I have tried other applications also on some clients PC's who have had other programs already installed, and they often killed other things in the process of "fixing" the spyware.

I wrote a guide on a process that has gotten me through probably close to a hundred cleanings. I really don't think there is anything it can't fix, besides the newest spyware releases that haven't been detected yet.

Search for Malware Warfare on google, and it will be one of the first results, on overclockers.com... or you could just click this link:

http://www.overclockers.com/tips1166/

BTW, I have come across something very similar this past month, but did not have the oppurtunity to fix it - after spending an hour investigating and trying to get anything productive accomplished, I had to give up and reimage the machine - at work the time is more important than actually finding the solution for a single person, and a reimage takes very little time. If more than one person was having the problem I could have gotten to the bottom of it.

Open other utilities like msconfig and a command prompt, and let me know if the infection kills those within a minute or two also - the bug I had this brief experience was killing any running process I opened which would have been useful in killing the bug. It was viciously self-preservative!

Do me a favor also and run a virus scan with the latest definitions on this machine - if you cannot run it locally with good definitions, run it from the symantec security response site and copy and paste the results here. The user I was working with was also infected with optixpro.13 and an undefined virus recognized by the heuristics, which is listed as "bloodhound.packed" by symantec.

alright i used spybot, adaware and CWshredder in safe mode with system restor off and the latest definitions. adaware runs clean, but spybot s&d keeps coming up with this:

i also got spywareblaster and am installing symantec corporate edition (for students). ill scan and see if it comes up with any viruses. i also read the overclockers.com article. ill check the things you experienced IMOG

*still watching*

Update? Post another hijackthis log so we can see if anything has changed since the last run, and I will take my time to go through it thoroughly the next chance I get. :)

thanks for the link addoraa, ill look more closely at that the next time im at the infected computer.

IMOG, taskman and msconfig both dont function, but run does. i cannot get to the symatec page (in order to update the virus definitions), which to me says trojan or virus. theres another thread towards the top of this section that talks about not being able to use taskmanager, so i think ill follow that some more. the next chance i'll have to look at the computer will be thurs probably and ill get the hijack this log

Does it tell you that its disabled by the adiministrator?

If so, you can try to run GPedit and re-enable it under user config>admin templates. You can nose around in there for settings to enable and disable taskman and msconfig. ;)

It may help having those at your disposal to remove this.

If you could post the freshest hijackthis log I would go through it today.

If I were you, I would run Stinger and Fprot then let us know if it does any good. ;)

optix pro is a trojan btw. possibly the user of the trojan could be watching the user in live time as he is opening programs and closes them himself. that could be a reason. try not connecting to the internet and opening those programs. this way he/she cant watch what your doing

stinger found W32/sdbot.worm.gen.i virus and deleted a file

edit: it also had a trojan which was blocking the symantec update. is there a good program for recognizing trojans? i was able to fix the 1 that was blocking symantec, but i want to know if there were other trojans

It isn't any human interaction killing these programs - it occurs without internet connection. Some function on the machine is killing those processes.

@Zip: Did you perform a scan from symantec's site once you re-enabled it? It will find trojans.

I will go through this log when I get home tonight, going out with the girl for the first time in a few weeks. (We're big fans of the couch - cheap and no one looks at you funny if you fall asleep there.) :D

yeah, after i got the symanted update it scanned clean. hopefully all the trojan and virus stuff is gone, im guessing theres still some spyware and adware i missed, but i can sift through that later.
