OK I'm planning on getting a 9800SE and softmodding to a 9800 Pro. But then I've heard of people softmodding a 9800 Pro to a 9800 XT, so basically can I get my 9800SE to a 9800 XT? And if so what kind of cooling would I need? Also where do I find the BIOS drivers and how do I flash the card? Thanks. I'm pretty new to this but I picked up the card for $50 so I thoguht I'd give it a try =)

I don't think you can flash from an se to xt, se to pro yes, if you have the 256bit se, you can only give it a go...

is your card 128bit or 256? if it's 128bit then it cannot be flashed to pro as it doesn't have the other 4 pipelines. :(

If your card has 128bit ram, it has only 4 pipes. If it has 256bit ram, it has 8 pipes with 4 disabled, and there is something like a 50-50 chance that all the pipes work correctly. You can tell the dif between a 128 and 256bit card with the image I attached.

if it is a 256bit, make sure you read this thread http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=270479

also, MAKE SURE you make a backup of your ORIGINAL bios, if it doesnt work then all you have to do is reflash your old bios onto it. be careful and good luck!

Yeah I know that. But here is what I'm planning on doing, getting a VGA silencer, or possibly water-cooling? Flashing the SE to 9800 Pro. Overclocking the 9800 Pro, flashign the XT BIOS? Does this work?

And how exactly does flashing work and how do I do it? Thanks.

The manual said 9800NP, is there a manual for the 9800SE?

It's the 256 bit version, trust me, I made sure of it before I bought it.

From what I understand, you can flash a PRO to XT, and sometimes you can flast an SE into RPO, but you cannot flash an SE into XT. going through a Pro BIOS will not do you any good. You can always try and OC the soft-modded SE to the speed of an XT, it will be pretty close.

That is not true. Both the 128 bit and 256 bit versions have 4 pipes on, and 4 disabled. I bought a 9800se 256-bit version off newegg 2 months ago and it didn't take the softmod kindly. I overclocked the core to 415 and the memory to 365 with stock cooling which is super crappy and in a hot case.
