I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 9100 Multimedia Powerhouse for *college needs*. I would like to fold on it but the thing gets to hot. It has a 2.8Ghz P4 (Prescott) in there so it really turns into an hot iron. It'll scortch my legs if I have it going full load all the time + it'll kill my already short batterly life. How can I get this thing to fold part time (partial CPU)?

if you stop wedo's one click and then open the .exe with a -config flag, change the cpu useage from 100 to like 20-40%

Version 5 of F@H is going to be more laptop friendly just FYI. It will have the option built in to stop folding on battery power and start again when plugged in. As far as the heat goes, I would start by setting the usage to 85 - 75% or so, not a drastic 20 - 40%.

I'll just add it into the config that executed when F@H is started. So the CPU usage change command is -config ?

Maybe I'll just wait for the laptop version?
There is a cpu usage tag in the config file, just set ti to whatever percent you want.

Isn't it worth trying to contact DELL and just tell them that your system is running way hot, without giving them the specific reason?
The old 8100 inspirons I had went very well after they were given a better CPU fan.. (which was actually quiet as well... one gotta wonder why)
But my few latitude series machines are folding "hands off".. I actually managed to kill one of them with F@H, leaving it on overnight at the office. Next day it was dead... (could be a coincidence, but I doubt it)
Cheers, Flix

What I'm thinking is that their computers should be designed to run at 100% CPU all the time right? I'll give them a call soon and see what can be done.

have the 5100 version of that laptop 2.6 MHz cpu...run it 24/7 folding temps got way way hot like in the up 60's till I found I8kfanGUI you can set the fan all sorts of ways and read your temps. once I got that running and fans full throttle I dropped down to the lower 60's...needed it to be cooler and the location of the intake for the fan is about as retarded as it can get....so I popped her open and replaced the TIM with Artic Silver ceramique...now full fan speed and full cpu usage I max out around 58...I also changed the goop on my vidchip as well...oh another nice feature of the proggy is that it reads the HDD temps as well......almost forgot. Directly under the keyboard and just above the fan was a thin steel plate...I removed it and that may have helped some of the heat escape.
as far as battery life...I don't know what to say I manually fire F@H up on all my machine..I like to watch the DOS screen...whoo mr. excitment :|.....once I ran F@H on battery and it lasted about an hour before it went soft on me :'(

Hopefully soon. With all the things going on right now, I hope the guys have the time for it. I really appreciate the one-clicks alot. :)
on my 1.6ghz centrino lappy i use the viewable console so i have better control of when its on/off. i have it set to 75% cpu usage and it seems to stay warm but not hot. i think 75% is perfect for normal laptops, perhaps 50% on a presshot lappy though.

Bah, my Sager (P4 3.06HT) has been folding every second it has been on for a year and a half. This beast has good cooling though, loud too but it folds just fine.

nikhsub, so your battery life is like what 15 minutes? :)

I get about 2 hours on my laptop battery no load at all (just sitting idle). I get about 1 hour full load like running F@H on both threads and playing Farcry or something like that with volume maxed out with the sub on. It just warms up really fast and I usually need to have it in a really cool room atmosphere for it to stay alive. It's covered by warranty anyways so I don't worry about it dying on me.

^Back from the dead.^ So the new F@H Console 5 now turns off when operating in battery mode on a laptop?

My lappies have been folding forever as well. One's an old celeron, the other a non-mobile Athlon XP (even overclocked). But then I did remove the heatpipe, lap it, and apply AS5.

on my comp it drops down to the lowest speed, 500 mhz, but keeps loaded atthat speed instead of 1.2. is there a way to stop it from loadin it ocmpletely?

i just got my inspiron 9100 with a 3.2 prewssy and i am running seti!home now for about 5 hours straigh with it on my lap - you should NOT have it flat on your lap anyways cause then you are blocking the air port on the bottom of the laptop - i hold mine between my legs and squeeze so the bttom area is open - but the front area is on my lap supporting it.
prescott's run hot - dell wont do anything about it!!

I think my Laptop got fried because of Folding... UGH
I have a Dell Inspiron 8000.
No wait? It's working again? I wonder if it was folding while in Hibernation mode all these months?
