When I start a game that changes my display mode like counter-strike or unreal tournament the monitor goes into sleep mode of something, but if I hit the windows key or something to break out of it, it turns back on and minimizes the game. This is for just them menu stuff, I haven't been able to start the game on that box yet.
It's windows me, geforce 2 mx 400, abit kt7a-raid with a 1.2 tbird.
The only thing I can think of right now is maybe it can't take the resolution or one of the settings in the game.

I can't figure why it would go into sleep mode if you are still moving the mouse regularly, but you may want to change the time it takes for the monitor to cut off.
Go to the control panel, and click on power management. Find the drop down list beside of "Turn off monitor". I'd change my settings to "Never" or "After 5 hours" if I were you.
This may or may not help.

I don't think that's what's causing it, if I alt+tab out of the game the monirot wakes up, but if I alt+tab back in, it goes back into sleep mode. If it only did that for 1 game I wouldn't even bother, but 2 and I start to wonder.
*edit*
Also does it with big game hunter 3, so I'm thinking it's something to do with the resolution, but I would think a geforce wouldn't have a problem. I've got the latest drivers installed.
Also it's an abit kt7a-raid mobo.

Well I figured it out, even though I had the correct drivers the wrong refresh rates were being sent to the monitor. I used a program called HZtools http://hem.spray.se/doxx/ and whipped out the monitor's manual, then set all the refresh rates 10hz below what the book said was the max. I also selected all the resolutions just incase the games were calling for them.
You may want to download a monitor profile from the manufacturer and use it in ME. If you are lucky it will have better info on your monitors refresh rates and stop the problem you are having. Also try the latest beta drivers instead of the release version it may help.
I had the same problem almost a year ago with my all in wonder radeon. It would only happen on non plug and play monitors but would be fine with a plug and play one.
