View Full Version : Joysticks . . . ?

How many gamers here actually use joysticks or gamepads? I know I've only tried a gamepad once, and it was so hideous it was put into a drawer and it will probably never see the light of day again :)
I'm just getting tired of all these people who assume that since I'm a gamer, that I have to have a joystick laying around somewhere. Also, what's with all these OEM computers that are supposedly "designed for gaming" with these $100 joysticks? I'd like to get a rough percentage here of how many people actually use joysticks or gamepads versus how many don't.

I have a $10 Interact Raider pro that I use when I play X-Wing/TIE Fighter games. Don't use it for anything else, and I don't have a joypad (Although I used to have a 3DFX HammerheadFX that I used for Descent 3)

For flight sims and racing games a joystick is essential. I have a wingman force that i got for 40 bucks on ebay with a couple of games with it.
I have a gamepad (like a playstation controller) that I use on racing games , I need a joystick for flight sims because the gamepad just wount cut it and the mouse well you can just forget about flight games using a mouse , well I have anyway.
The gamepad I use was cheap it gcame with Motocross madness its a sidewinder , I think I payed 40 bucks 2 years ago. I dont use it very much though its still pretty much in mint condition.

I use a Wingman joystick for flight sims. It's okay for fps games 'cuz I can program the buttons to mimic keystrokes. I just bought a gamepad for my kids. They prefer the gamepad over the joystick for nearly every game they play.
I have a Saitek Cyborg gameport joystick, and a Firestorm Feedback game pad. But I don't use either of them. Most of the games I play use the mouse and keyboard best. And I'm disappointed in PC gamepads. After playing on a Playstation, or PS2, you get used to having TRUE analog joypads on the gamepad, where your character moves according to how far you push the stick. I have yet to have a PC gamepad do that. They're all pretty much digital joysticks on gamepads.
I have microsoft sidewinder freestyle pro, but it sux because microsoft never released win2k drivers for it, but i can still use it for games like Tony Hawk 2 + Motocross Madness. other games like Half Life and other first person shooters i just use my wireless keyboard + mouse

Ya , mine sucks too I can only use it for Motocross Madness , I cant seem to get it to work on anything else , well I dont have much else I coulnt get it to work for Quake 3 or Star Wars.
Since I can only use my game pad for one game witch it dont play very often I went to remove the controler software but every single time I get an error "this program has performed a fatal error and will shut down". I guess the only way to remove it is to reformat my HDD!!
You got to love Micro@#$% , ya right.

just to point out but.........why would anyone use a joypad or joystick to play in counterstrike or ut or quake games?
it's not really possible to "aim" since it's too slow....plus i doubt u will have enough buttons for almost everything.....
my 2 cents

i use a mouse for aiming and strafing and a sidewinder percision pro for forward and bacward movement and i own with it, my fingers just dont work on the keyboard, many people claim the keyboard is best but i toatally disagree , well in my case anyway

I play a lot of flight sims, so I use a joystick a lot. I've just upgraded from a Saitek ST50, to one of their Cyborg 3D Gold USB ones. Excellent!

I use the Saitek Cyborg 3D Gold USB and I love it. It is one of the best joysticks ever made!
I have a wingman warrior joystick, got it with my first computer and have rebuilt it a few times since then, however one day I came home after the kids where in my computer room and I found it broken off at the stick.. will take some SERIOUS super glue to make that thing reliable again, any suggestions?

Yea, I would buy a new joystick. Actually two. One for the kids and one for yourself.
Verry funny, but their mum can buy the their own joy stick, and I'm gonna lock my computer room down now on, when they are over so they dont trash my stuff!
Still looking for some strong expoxy/superglue

I have one of those cheap joysticks that plugs into the sound card. I bought it in the early 90's when I had a 486. I never use it anymore, because it only has 2 buttons.

Try some stuff called "Liquid Nails". My wife uses it for stuff around the house. I have never tried it so I don't know how it would work on plastic. Make sure you test it on something else first.

Go to Home Depot and get some ProBond polyurethane glue, if that doesn't work neither will epoxy.
You could try that plastic cement they use on pipes as it melts the plastic a little - it may make a stronger joint.
If it's the shaft and it's under the boot maybe you could put some thin walled plastic tube around it to reinforce it, and glue that in place too.

The absolute pinicle of all FPS and flight sim joysticks is the Mad Catz Panther XL. This thing works awsome cause it has a trackball on the left side and a joystick on the right. It is a Halflife sponsored joystick!!!! I use a mouse but this I used for 2 years. If you perfer a joystick this is it!

Thanks for the ideas, and yeah its under the plastic boot where she snaped.. well atleast where the boot used to be that got gnarled off years ago from some serious joystick action :)
Not to mention I've rebuilt her a few times already.. damn nylon gears wear out to fast.. wish they where all good ol steel!!

While I must admit that MS sucks, I have and use the hell out of their Sidewinder Precision Pro...not being a purist, I really like the twistoflex action for the rudder pedals and am perfectly happy with this stick...I paid 70 bucks for it new, but they are alot cheaper now days...Flight Sims Forever...

i have the ol microsoft sidewinder (black one with a start button, a,b,c,x,y,z, and the two underside buttons.) it rocks! I play neogeo, gameboy, snes, and mame with it. it rocks. plus it has a nice feel to it. not to mention the ability to attach another sidewinder to it. killer instinct (arcade) also plays well with it.

For me the best setup for most fps that support gamepads is the following:
MS Sidewinder - 8 buttons
MS optical intellimouse 6 buttons
i use gamepad in my left hand to strafe left and right and walk forward and backwards, and left trigger finger has a button on it i use to jump...
right hand on mouse to shoot, open doors etc...
ive got 8 buttons i can reach easily without having to search for a key.. its a badass setup and i would own anyone in UT ;)
try it b4 u knock it...

I've been playing stuff like ut and Q3 for some time. (though I haven't played them recently) and I always used the mouse and keyboard. It just makes it easier for me. But as of late I've gotten a joystick and that promted me to get MS combat sim game.
Play on

I have a MS freestyle pro. I got it for under 20 bucks after a big rebate from MS and buying online. It works good for the money. The gamepad is ok for some games but horrible for others. The digital problem. I thought motocross madness was fun with the motion sensor and play it ever so often. I am not a big gamer though so I make do with this on most games I play.
i have a ms sidewinder gamepad. its the 8button variety that connects to the soundcard port. i like it but then again i grew up on nintendo so im addicted to gamepads. i think im gonna get the converter so i can use my ps dualshock controler on my pc.
Reddeathmon...have you tried Jane's WWII Fighters? That is a killer game and I thought alot better than CFS 1...don't have 2 because I thought the first one wasn't all that good...Jane's is a helluva lot better for my money.
I also noted from another post that you are a modeler as well...May I ask what scale and what subjects??? Cool new avatar...lunge n snap...
