Well I saved my reddies - and i ordered a duron 900 socket A and a matsonic mobo (not the best but im on a tight budget)- My question is this: How much will they overclock without water or thermal paste - I got a big Coolermaster HSF - What am I likely to hit?

Thanks in advance

There is no magic number, every system will get different results. You'll probably be able to hit a gig pretty easily and maybe even 1100 or more. Just depends. About the only thing you can do is try it and see what you can get. There is a CPU database on the main page where you can see what others have been able to do with theirs. Just dont get dissapointed if you see someone hit 1500 Mhz with theirs and yours wont. My 1200 wont go past 1435 no matter what I do and other people have been hitting 1500 and 1600 with the same setup I have.

Why no thermal paste? I've always found that it's always helped to keep temps cooler.
You can buy a cheap tube of it at RadioShack for about US $2 , or for a nicer brand, go with Artic Silver (about $9 us). You can look it up at pricewatch.

Oh, yes. Welcome to the forums.

10g should be plenty, with some left over.
Spread it evenly over the core, with a nice coat - not thick, but barely enough to cover up all the black.

okay now is it jsut the core - or core and die?

Here is a link to the instructions from the Artic Silver site. The illustrations should help

i THOUGHT u could put the thermal paste on the cpu die and take off the extra with a razor blade until there is a thin film left.

Same here. 900Tbird on an Abit KT7 Raid. It wouldn't run over 1000 stable under load. Clocked it back to 950 just to get it to reboot.

hmmm, I must have been lucky, my Duron 750 did 1070 as well, it's now on my brothers computer with a Asus A7V non 133 with the multiplier at 10.5x102 vcore at 1.90. It's lapped so I can't get the stepping for you guys.

85% of the SpitFire Based Durons do not go much more the 1.1 ghz on the top end. YOu get a few in the 1.15 range but those are more rare. Best I got with a 650 to 950 was 1120 mhz with a friends machine.
