View Full Version : High temps for Athlon
Hi. I'm running a 1.4 Thunderbird on a KT7A. Right now my max temps are 45C with 1.8 volts with an ambient temp of 80F in my room. I have a Swiftech MC462A and the 80mm Delta fan. Is this temp too high for me? I wanna overclock but if it's getting this hot already, it's sketchy. Shouldn't this heatsink keep it cooler? Thanks for any advice.

Hi VecchK,
You need to improve the case airflow adding at least 2 fans, one for the intake and one for the exhaust, and I suppose that you've used a thin layer of thermal paste between the chip and the Hsf.
I hope it helps you ;)
I've got two 80mm's 35 CFM sucking in and 1 80mm 35 CFM blowing out. I'm adding 120mm 125 CFM blowing out soon.
I used a very thin layer of AS2. Should it have been thicker?

You must sucks the same air into the case that you blows out, considering the Cfm of each fan intake/exhaust.
wait a sec? is that 45c for idle or load? cuz if its for idle, its good, and if its for load that temp is great
For max temps, that sounds fine but I would suggest a lower ambient temp, add another exhaust fan to even things out. You pull in cool air, but it just mixes with the standing hot air and it all gets hot. Then your pushing in more than you can take out. I have two 80s in the front and 2 in the back, with one on the side, as well as the 80 on my MC462. I usually max around 48C, just cause im too lazy to run the AC all day. When thats on, I usually max at 32C, real nice.. you shouldnt have to worry about heat till you get into the 50Cs.
That's my max temp.
Heat is an issue though. It craps out on me constantly at 45 C when I clock it at 1.54 GHz. :( If I put a huge fan on it with the side off to blow cold air it maxes at 43C and it's stable.
Oh well. Hopefully the extra fan will help. Thanks for the advice, everyone.
Yeehaw! Cut a hole in the top of my case and installed a YS Tech 120mm fan with 125 CFM. Let the baby run prime 95 all day at 1.54 GHz and 1.89v. Perfeclty stable! Highest it hit all day was 45 C and the ambient almost hit 90 F today. :)
... I'll try 1.6 GHz tomorrow after I burn it in at this speed. :D

Great!
I hope that you'll get higher freq., good luck ;)

Those temps may still be a little high. I have my 1.4 up to 1667 with the voltage at 1.85 with the swiftech MC462a and I max out at 45.
What is your ambient temp? Are you in a cold area or do you have air conditioning? For me, right now, the ambient temp never drops below 75 F at night and is usually over 80 F in the daytime.
I let prime 95 run all last night. Last night it hit 65 F in my room. I checked the MBM logs and my temp at the lowest ambient temp was 33 C. Keep in mind this is WITH Prime 95 running. Looks like ambient makes a HGUE difference. Hopefully in the winter I can hit 1.65 GHz all day. For now 1.56 GHz is more then enough for me. :D

Of course, I meant HUGE. I've had a few beers tonight. Forgive the typo.
My athlon 1,4 hits 58c idle and while playing cs it hits 63c :/
Is it wise to stop playing and buy a new cooler first? While i read these posts, i`m getting worried of the temp i`m getting :(

Hi WooK, wellcomw to the Forum,
I think that with those temps you really need of a new cooler, what are you using at the moment? rememeber always that between the chip & cooler is needed a thin layer of thermal paste.
thnx :)
i`ve got a coolermaster EP5-6I11 but getting a Thermaltake Dragon Orb monday cause of those temps
I`ve got an extra cooler (60mm?) Blowing some extra air towards that cooler to but that doesn`t realy help either :( I have to let my case open cause otherwise the temp is even higher then 62c
Do you think that Dragon orb is gonna help?
(I`m dutch so soz for my english :) )

Wook, I think that the best way for your chip is the ThermalRight SK6 or the Millenium Glaciator, both made of copper, about the Orb's well, they have the baddest reputation in the overclockers world. About the case cooling, you must always sucks into the case the same air that is blowed out, considering the fans Cfm and the Power supply fan that is better that blows out the hot air.
The size for case fans to prefer are the 80, 92 or better 120mm.
I hope it helps you ;)
If you really wanna go hardcore get the new Alpha or the Swiftech MC462A. Both require you to take out the motherboard and install nuts and bolts through the holes around the socket. Once that is in, however, the HSF installation is simple as all you have to do is screw it in. Both are also, unfortunatly, very expensive. :(

DO NOT BUY AN ORB COOLER!!!!
donīt do it, buy what the other guys before me suggested
The Orbs may look nice, but they do much better as paperweight, then on cooling a hot T-Bird.
