Ok, now my brother told me that his pc won't read discs. I go and see what's wrong. Well, CD's work, it's just that the drive won't read DVDs. So I thought maybe a driver update may help. I update the driver, and halfway through, Windows crashes with a screen stating physical memory dump....I let it run through.
Now, it will not load Windows. In the bios it does not recgonize hard drives nor the CD/DVD combo drive. All it recgonizes is the floppy drive.
What do I do to fix all this? I am sooo dead.

You've checked all hardware possibilities? i.e. cables there and secure, have tried spare IDE cables, etc?
I'm no expert, but I've had a lot of problems from insecure fixings.

I checked the cables. Still don't work.
I moved the hard drive and combo drive to another computer, the hard drive is detected but won't boot into Windows though. And the combo drive...won't even power up. Sigh.

Did you update the CD/DVD drivers or IDE drivers? I had a problem booting into windows after installing new IDE drivers. I ended up just reinstalling windows, but I'm sue there is an easier way, but I just couldn't be bothered.

Your harddrive wouldn't be able to boot into windows on another computer unless it had the same hardware configuration. So don't worry about that. Will the combo drive power up on the pc it came from?

Oh, ok, didn't know about different hard drives in different computers.
Well, the drivers I installed were from the LG site, for the combo drive. The combo drive won't power up from the original computer either.

I don't see how software drivers would effect powering up. Have you ever updated the firmware for the combo drive? I could see how a bad firmware update would make the combo dead though. What is the situation with the harddrive and what are the specs for the HDD and the combo drive?

Frimware shouldn't have been updated, but I'll ask my brother.
The hdd is 40 gig maxtor, and the combo drive is LG 4480B.
I'm going to try if I can read the data off the hdd, moving it to another computer as slave.
