How exactly should i remove my processor from my computer... does it hurt the cpu when you pull the cpu out of the socket when the latch is down and its attatched to the heatsink? If it does, how the hell do you get it off.

You may cause damage to the socket. The best bet is to get the sink off first and then properly remove the CPU from socket by lifting the latch lever, etc.
That said, it coming out once like that shouldn't cause permanent damage. What sort of paste did you use?

umm.. the paste that was with the stock intel heatsink.. How do i get the heatsink off first though..

It should either be held down by a clip that runs through the heatsink and clips to the sides of the socket, or possibly screws down at the corners of the heatsink.
When you know which it is then you just unclip or unscrew.
Either way, try to minimize any non-horizontal pressure while you're unhooking. Applying pressure to a heatsink at an angle to the chip can damage it and create a very expensive (if still pretty) necklace pendant :bang head

That is a good idea about the pendant.. if i ever happen to break one or burn one up without a warranty i believe i will do that.. i will wear it too. :p
in my experiance most of the intel chips come out with the HSF, when the locking lever is down. it makes a nice grinding noise :D

Did you ever try rotating the HSF first to break the seal between HS and chip?

The rotation should help break any suction, too. :)
I don't work with PGA478--so I didn't know how the retention mechanism worked. Be gentle, be smooth, and be deliberate.
Once you get the sink and chip separated, use high-purity isopropyl and lint-free cloths to clean the thermal interface stuff off.

I agree.... I had the same thing happen when I removed my slk-948, I just pulled up and I heard a grinding noise. Looked at the bottom of the HS and there was my processor, stuck to the HS with a whole row of bent pins  .
Fortunately, I was able to bend them back with a credit card... but still, be carefull when you remove the HS! The next time I had to remove it, I twisted the HS and it came off with no problems. So definitely twist... don't pull! :D
