When i was removing the stock heatsink and fan to replace them, i forgot that the stock comes with a thermal pad and thus sticks to the heatsink unlike thermal compound. When i pulled straight up, the CPU, Heatsink and all came right out. No pin damage, no damage to anything. I thought that little lever "locked" the CPU into place? am i crazy?

Crap! I forgot. This is with a P4 2.8c on an ASUS P4P800 deluxe.

Pulling the CPU out ONCE probably won't kill it.
Try to separate CPU and HSF without bending pins now. Don't try to put it back in. Use a twisting motion...should work.
Once you're done, clean the surfaces with rubbing alcohol (high purity) and then apply your new goop and install as per instructions.

Yeah. I knew not to put it back in. This is where a hair dryer and rubbing alcohol came in. Chip is back in place and safe and sound. But i was wondering how i did it, considering not a single pin was bent in the process.

Crappy sockets.

It locks it in place, but not very hard - not enough to make up the pins, from what I've seen, get dented up or anything. And they're pretty soft...
It probably just slipped out. As long as you didn't pull part of the socket out with it, I'm sure you're fine. ;)
This happens a lot. Even to me once.

The socket is designed this way on purpose, actually. LGA775 doesn't have any problems like this (but it has its own, heh).
sucky noob

this happened to me twice. the first time i actually cracked the locking grid on the motherboard, and both times i bent a bunch of pins. It took me about an our to manually bend all the pins back into place with a little wire. The cpu fits, but its not as clean of a fit as it was at stock.
