Please don't use "cheap" and "good" in the same sentence when refering to computer parts. It doesn't happen.
I run a 167Mhz FSB on a 3Com 905-C TX. They aren't the cheapest on the lot, but they perform at high PCI speeds.

i didn't say "cheap" i need like 5 nics and 60$ a piece is gonna be alot. trust me, i don't go around looking for the cheapest stuff i can get my hands on.
There is going to be a debate over here about this. I would get a Netgear (already own FA311, it has a bit of a problem, but it is easily fixed), or a D-Link. I found my $30CAD FA311 good, and it also can take a 41.5MHz PCI bus.

Best Buy, CompUSA, Circuit City have been having specials on both Linksys and D-Link PCI NICs. $15-$10 rebate=$5 NIC. I know the Linksys have a two item limit so you may have to buy a couple of each to maximize your savings.
Good Luck. :)
Love my D-Links and Best Buy has them at $9.97 right now (as of last Saturday anyways).
Mine have taken whatever I've thrown at them.

someone was telling me that there wouldnt be any type of performance difference between brand name and no-name.if so, go pic one up for 8 bucks somewhere (interenet, local mom&pop, compusa).

lol for fun i searched on pricewatch too see how low they cost. found one where the shipping cost more.
I myself am a huge fan of the Netgear FA311. I've bought like, four, and have only had one DOA. As for D-link and netgear, I've had nothing but troubles when I use them. I tend to steer clear of them, and stick with Netgear equipment (cards, switches).
Not to long ago at a show I got half a dozen Intel Ether Express Pro 10/100 nics for 15 bucks each! This is one of my favorite nics. Low cpu utilization and the fact that no matter what OS you install the drivers are built in for this nic, say goodby to driver disks :) They also OC great to, have had them running over 40mhz pci.

Paul whatever you do don't buy a netgear FA 311 you will have great problems using it in your 8K7A Mobo i repeat DO NOT that card is incompatible with that MoBO just thought id save you some trouble i have 2 of them and everytime i put one in my system i just get a black screen. Also the Lynksys USB NICs are trouble they work but will slow your mem scores down. I use Lynksys and Realtek pci cards and have had no problems with them you could get a realtek for 10 bucks at PC club. Ive also heard good things about D link and SMC for budget cards.

No problem :)
D-link, SMC, 3com, Netgear... all work well.
I dont have much exp with OC on all of them though...
trying to remember which NIC's I have in my machine at home, it can do 158mhz stable...
I think they are a d-link and an SMC. Could be wrong though :)

I just love the linksys NIC's, you can get a kit with a 5 port hub and 4 NIC for under 70 bucks at office depot.
I have an Intel Pro Management card in both my PCs and in the one it runs well at 40mhz PCI bus. Anything higher starts to get flakey. No driver issues and no lockups in 5+ months.
Computer Fairs are the best place to find good NICs cheap. These were like $13 a pop 6 months ago.

OK I found the info, I have over 20 kingston NIC cards in my office that have been working great for over a year. The last time I bought them I got a 6-pack for $45. The part# for the six-pack is: KNE111TX/6. If you just want one it is KNE111TX. I am not sure how cheap they are if you buy singles. The six pack is a brown box , no retail package with 1 driver floppy.
I found the best price buy typing the model number in the search at C-net's shopper.com
