I was doing a favor for someone and ended up trashing my own system!!
Someone wanted the 1.5 gig HDD on an old system burned to
CD-R to save the files. They didn't need an image, just the data files. So, I open up my case and connect an extra HDD ribbon cable and power connector to the drive without taking it out of the case, and fired up my system.
Everything works as expected and I burn two CDs with the data..no problem. I unhook the HDD and reboot my system and I get all kinds of errors such as HIMEM.sys and WIN.COM missing and it will not boot to the OS. Tried all kinds of boot floppies and other boot to DOS floppies and no good.
Eventually I needed to reinstall WIN98 and am now back to where I was, I hope.
The only thing that happened out of the ordinary was when I first started the system with the extra drive attached, I had the configuration wrong and it loaded the Win95 OS from the other drive. I let it complete the load and shut down. Redid the config and it loaded into my OS fine and I burned the CDs.
But then after disconnection the extra drive, it crapped out.

Any ideas as to what happened??

Sounds like you hosed your boot record when you added another drive that was also set active and had a boot record on it.

Yeah, sounds like when you did this-
The only thing that happened out of the ordinary was when I first started the system with the extra drive attached, I had the configuration wrong and it loaded the Win95 OS from the other drive.

things got ugly, like Jon said.
