I would go with this one:

NEC ND-2510A 8X4X12 BEIGE DUAL LAYER DVD+-RW OEM W/ SOFTWARE (ND-2510A) - $103.98

Considering it is dual layer capable.

2nd that vote for the NEC. I have the 2500A single layer and love it. Plus it's firmaware flashable for Dual Layer. Just haven't gotten around to doing it yet.

I just bought the OEM version (Hitachi unboxed no software etc) for the equivalent of US$70 sounds like I got a bargain!

just out of curiosity, why is that burner so expensive? Newegg has it for $72 onsale today and they usually don't give that great of a discount. Maybe I am wrong though. Also, has anyone found a good source for dual layer DVDs yet?

specs aren't everything ;)

for example, i'd much rather have a nice 4x plextor than that lg

agreed, but who actually buys plextor anymore? I see no need to spend the extra money since the stuff I can afford is MUCH cheaper and still is pretty much the same. So I guess the NEC drive is ok? All of mine in the past have either been Sony or LG or Liteon. Advice?

The NEC is pretty awesome in my opinion. I backed up 16 of my movies this weekend and had zero problems. I've gone through nearly a whole spool (50) of -R's and haven't had a coaster yet. I recommend it highly.
