View Full Version : computer wont stay on
i have an xp3200 on a asus a7v600 board with 1gb of kingston pc3200 and a a volcano 7 heatsink. the heatsink is making contact with the cpu and there are no noises/sounds coming from the comp. the comp will shut off after about 10 sec of being on and the only way i can get it to power back on is if i shut off the psu, which is a 350 smartpower, and it happens again. it boots to the bios, cause its a new install without any software on the harddrive yet. from what i can see of the screen, the cpu shows 1.4ghz as the processor speed. i have swithed out the cpu with a palamino 1700 and it still does the same thing. i dont have an extra mobo lying around to try and test whats going on. anyone have any ideas? i am using artic silver for the thermal paste. the only difference i have noticed is with the mobo screws. on one of my other comps, there is what seems like a cardboard piece that will separate the screw from the modo. could this be whats causeing the comp to shut off?

With the need to restart the PSU between attempts, makes me think it's the 'breaker' in the PSU. Do you have another available to throw in to test?
DWolf:cool:
not the psu. switched it out with a 400w truepower and it does the same thing. :bang head

Disable automatic thermal shutdown in the BIOS under PC health status. One of the thermistors maybe malfuctioning, or it's turning the machine off because it can't sense the RPMs of the CPU Fan header.
the computer wont stay on long enough for me to do anything. i now know its not the cpu, because i have it connected to an abit nf7 mobo with no problems. so the only thing left would be the asus. time for an rma, thanks for the advice guys.
