Hello, I am living in an appartment right now that has a wireless connection and I am having a lot of problems with networking my laptop with my desktop. Both computers are connected to the same network and are in the same workgroup, and both can see and resolve the computers in the apartments around me, but they can't resolve one another, i.e. they are listed in the Computers Near Me, but when I double click on the laptop from the desktop or on the desktop from the laptop it says:
"\\COMPUTER is not accessible. The network path was not found."
They also can't ping one another. So normally I would think that they are not on the same network, but that doesn't make sense to me because they can see the same computers and can even access them (as far as being prompted for a user name and password). Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? Thanks a lot.

It could be the XP firewall.

Both computers are using Windows 2000. The desktop has a firewall, but it is set to notify me when a connection is attempted and it doesn't pop up the notification. Also, I have tried shutting down my firewall and it still doesn't seem to work.

Windows 2000 is just like NT. You will have to set permissions on each machine.

What do you mean by "set permissions" I have the hard drives shared and the wireless network connections have File and Print Sharing installed and enabled as well as Client for Microsoft Networks installed and enabled.

just sharing something isnt good enough for windows 200, that would be too nice. you have to screw with the permissions button and tell it all kinds of stuff to make it happily networkable.

Oh, and i'm assuming they are on the same subnet, as well.

You mentioned that the firewall is set to tell you when connections are attempted. Are you sure it will also tell you when an attempt is made from outside, not just an application on the computer?

I have 2 win2k computers networked, and it was very simple. Make the workgroup, make a rule in the firewall and that was it. To view any files I had to turn sharing on, but you don't need to do anything else...

You have'nt been disabling services on the computers have you?
