need something like a 8mb buffer special edition western digital drive maybe like a 160gb. any other good hard drives out there that r like ata100 or 133 and 8mb buffer?
I've had good luck with Maxtor drives. Here's a 160 GB SATA 7200 rpm 8MB buffer drive from newegg.com:

I have the 120GB version of that harddrive and im very happy with it, its my second Maxtor and i've never had any problems with the one in my old computer and none with this as of yet either.
My dual raptors are the only WDs i've had so im not too well informed on that..i would say put two 72GB raptors in raid0 though ;) (if you have the $$ hehe)

I had the following Western Digital drives:
40GB 7200RPM 2MB Cache
80GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache
2x100GB 7200RPM 2MB Cache
8GB 5200RPM 2MB Cache
All of them have been very reliable and fast, but they've all been very loud, too. If you don't mind the noise then WD drives are a good choice.
If you are looking for quiet drives then look at Hitachi (used to be IBMs drives), Seagate and Samsung.
I have two Seagate 40GB 7200rpm/2MB drives. They are nearly silent, ATA100, perform well and have worked perfectly for ages (one drive is 1.5yrs old, one is 1 year old).
I also have a Samsung Spinpoint ATA150 (SATA)/7200rpm/8mb cache drive. Its also fast and quiet. Only had it for a few weeks though so I cant really comment on reliability as yet.

Hitachi gets my two thumbs up. Speed, reliability, and very quiet,

are the western digital drives really that loud? do they only make noise when its being used or is it loud either way? i have 2 40gb maxtor 2mb buffer drives with the dynamic fluid bearing or something and they seem pretty quiet but i havent heard any other hard drives its on raid0. do you think a 8mb buffer drive would be faster than my raid setup? oh yea no sata drives because my motherboard cant use them

I owned a set of 80gb SE 8mb drives in raid 0, and they were simply inaudible unless the case was open. Both have been used for other systems, but are still running to this day. Great drives, but probably aren't as fast as some of the newer drives that have hit the market.
