just wondering...why is it that my wireless connection with a 50% signal can sometimes be at 54 mbits, and then its usualy a 60% signal and only 8 or 26 mbit? shouldnt it just be 54 all the time?

How are you getting a normal router running at 54mbps? That's almost 7MB/s.... transfering files over LAN or what? Either way that's VERY VERY fast... Or is it too late for me and am I getting numbers mixed up? That may be it too....

Wireless G, 802.11G. 54Mb/s.

Are you going through walls when your speed is lower, and within sight when your speed is full?

Wow didn't think you could get the techinal spec of the wireless routers... always thought real world was much lower.

its a wrt54 g, and this is a desktop connected wirelessly...

sometimes i get 54 mbps in here, and sometimes...like now...i have 18 mbps...

i've seen it at 54mbps several times, why isnt it more often? maybe its an option in my router to set the speed....i'll go play with that

turns out htis is one of those "it works, shut up and leave it alone" topics.

just spent 2 hours getting my connection working again...dont change the "basic rate" from "default" to "all"

Holy poo.

If anyone is using any Cordless phones in th 2ghz bandwidth it can really drop your Wireless G at times. Especially if you are going through walls or floors at a very shallow angle. My Wireless G system does great late a night, but during the day when my wife and neighbors are active on their cordless phones my transfers are very sporatic. I go from 5 to 54mbps. A huge variation.

Different things could be happening, those percentages don't really mean squat. That percentage is how strong of a signal *your* radio is getting from the *ap*, but what is the percentage based off of? What is the ratio? etc. One thing to consider is that wireless is two-way, you can guess how well you are 'seeing' the signal but can you tell how well the ap is 'seeing' you?

You could have a large amount of noise in the area or perhaps the ap is not recieving your signal well.
