I recently just purchased a 120GB Hitachi Hard Drive. I decided to reinstall windows, after all the drivers were done loading from the CD, it came up with this error:
Disk I/O Error: Status 00000100
After the setup finished, it would come up with this error whenever I tried to boot from a CD.
I disabled my 60GB Hard drive in the BIOS and the error didn't show up when I tried to install windows. The only problem was that all the windows files were on
D: and the performance of windows seemed very slow.
So I thought I try to reinstall windows again this time just keeping the 120GB hard drive in. Whenever I tried it, it came up with that error again.
What I wanted to do was Save the 120GB for windows and then put linux on the 60 GB HD.
I read somewhere that this error can possibly come from malfunctioning hardware, and I was thinking of RMAing back to Newegg.

Anyone have any ideas before I RMA that could possibly fix this?

Is your system overclocked? I would put EVERYTHING at stock first, then proceed. Google your error message and read whatever comes up.

Disk I/O error is normally a hardware issue.Possible jumper error or some conflict within the IDE setup.A little more info is needed. How was the drive setup and formatted? Did you change any other IDE device to accomidate the new drive? Was windows resident on the other drive when you installed it on this one? Did you use fdisk to create the partition and make it active before formatting?

It sounds to me like you tried to install an O/S while there was a drive in the system with an O/S on it.(The 60 gig)

Remove the 60 , Set the 120 to master.Run eather a low level format or fdisk from a 98 floppy and erase the MBR on the 120.After you do this install XP on the 120 with it alone in the computer or use the disk utility to copy the bootable 60 to the 120...

I don't have anything overclocked. Whenever I first installed the 120 I had the drive formatted in windows xp as NTFS, but the wierd thing was that it didn't show up in My Computer, so I had to go into disk management and initiate and format it. Both drives have jumpers set as cable select. I originally had the 60 drive set as Master, and the 120 as slave, then moved the 120 to Master and took out the 60, with an OS already on the 120. I tried running windows 2000 setup and it came up with that error.
Does microsoft offer the fdisk utility to download or does it just come with windows 98, because I dont have 98? What is a low level format, and how do you do it?
Thanks for the replies.

I contacted Hitachi about this and they said that it could be the drive that is the problem. I ran their Drive Fitness Test and I am waiting a response on whether or not I should RMA the drive.
But anyways, I tried the Fdisk and it didn't help out, same with the XP boot disks, it wouldn't even let me begin the setup.
Thanks for all your help guys and hopefully I can get this fixed soon!

Did you run a low level format or delete the Master Booot Record on the drive ? Doing that would most likely fix your problem..I am Betting the Disk will test ok..

I got it working. Thanks diehrd.
I couldn't do anything in fdisk (probably using the wrong command). On the Hitachi Fitness Test there was an option to erase the master boot record and to do a low level format. I didn't see this until I was reading through the readme lol.
Thanks again diehrd!
