View Full Version : New a64 rig stock score is quite good

3200+ 2.2ghz newcastle
asus k8v se deluxe via kt800 chipset
1x512 mushkin bh5 200mhz 2 2 2 5
tyan g9800pro stock 380/340
20,098 very first run.
pretty nice. my previous best stock rig was a 3000+ a64 on a shuttle an50r with the same ram. scored 19,175 with some tweaking.
i'll see what this poor via chipset will do before i upgrade to the dfi lan party, but i'm not holding out much hope. i doubt that i can even max out the chip on this thing

Wow, that's much better than I've done. I think I got about 18,600 stock. I'm not sure what's different between your setup and mine. I could run mine with the lowest possible memory timings, I've got a built-by-ATI 9800 Pro, same MB and same CPU.
I simply downloaded the most recent Catalyst drivers.
I did have an nVidia card installed before I plugged in my 9800 Pro, could that be it?
i'm running on a clean reinstall. if you had a nvidia card in the rig then moved to the ati you should always do a clean reinstall.
i'm running cat 4.6 which is the latest approved driver.
Is your memory ratio 1:1? Did you set it to Turbo?
I messed around with my memory settings and it ended up corrupting files in my XP install... /sigh
I wasn't planning to reinstall XP, but it looks like that I have to do anyway.
i left it on auto. and yes its 1:1 200mhz 2 2 2 5

new stock score. all i did was install the control panel and slide everything to performance.
20158 gained 9fps in nature.
I reinstalled everything from scratch and my scores have dropped! I think I originally got about 18,600... now I'm not even hitting 18000. I'm going to change my RAM timings to see if that helps... when I turned on Turbo, it completely screwed my SATA HD, causing me to reformat and reinstall.

Would you mind posting all of your RAM timings? I really don't understand why your stock scores are so much better than mine. I'm tweaking things, but even when I upped my FSB to 210, I couldn't break 20K.
I'm pretty disappointed with my K8V SE Deluxe MB at this point. It works, but it's been a headache.
2 2 2 5 12 16
cpu/11 200mhz
i don't have turbo or anything like that on.
2 2 2 5 12 16

When I open up CPU-Z, it says CPU/14. What have I set up incorrectly?
In my Memory Configuration settings, I have
Memclock Mode (Limit -> 1:1, right?)
CAS
TRC
TRFC
TRCD
TWR
TWRT
TRAS
TRP
DDR Clock Delay
2T Command
Do you set values in these or let them populate based on your memory's programmed timings? If not, what settings do you choose here?
Playing with my timings has gotten me back to where I was before, around 18,600... but that was with my MemClock to CPU ration set to 2:1.
Thanks again
Could my scores be worse because I'm running 2 512MB sticks?

damn, i need to get a 9800 or better:
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7990576
i'd get over 20k if i had a better vid card, but that 3200 clawhammer at 2.4ghz is good.
i need better RAM too.
also, would it be better if i used DX 8.1 instead of 9? and im gonna install Windows 2000 when i get a new mobo.
I only changed memory timings/ratio and left all my other settings to their default. I managed to get 18,808 out of this setup.
I can't figure out how to get 20,000 with this combo. Maybe I just haven't set something up correctly... /shrug
I may reinstall my Mobile Barton/nForce2 setup to compare scores. I'm curious how it would compare to this.
i manually set the settings i knew.
fsb:dram cpu/11
cas 2
ras to cas 2
ras precharge 2
tras 5
those were the only ones i manually adjusted.
the others were left to automatic and showed up like this in cpuz:
trc 12
dram idle timer 16
trcd is greyed out in cpuz so maybe it doesn't even use that one??
the biggest disparity i'm seeing is cpu/11 for me and cpu/14 for you which takes your ram down to 157mhz which could easily make the difference. i don't know how to change it cause i'm not familiar with this bios and don't remember without a reboot. whatever you do, don't let it detect auto for ram speed and timings i've yet to have a mobo that reads them correctly 100% of the time.
Thanks again Maxvla. I pulled one of my DIMMs and the BIOS didn't like it. I just set everything to defaults so I could boot up, checked CPU-Z and sure enough, I have CPU/11 too.
I'm running 3D Mark 2001 to see how it does. I'll do some tweaking with my timings too.
ACK!! I'm cursed.
3D Mark 2001 SE crashed while I was running it. I reduced my RAM timings and booted back into windows... which immediately told me it had to recover the registry :(
Now, everytime I run 3D Mark 2001, regardless of my timings, it crashes. I've uninstalled and reinstalled... it still crashes.
I can say that I saw a nice improvement in the first test, in some places it was up 15-20FPS. Who knows what it would have done had everything completed.
I think I'm goinng to reinstall XP AGAIN after I do some testing with Prime95. I'm feeding my memory 2.8v instead of 2.6v so I can keep the same timings as you Maxvla. I did this before with my nForce2 setup while testing, so I know my memory can take the voltage.
good luck to you mitch :)
I tried reinstalling XP... failure. I've run these timings on my nForce2 board before, so I really don't think it's my memory. I relaxed the timings to my memory's rated speeds and got the same thing the second time I tried to install XP (Blur Screen of Death).
I'm running Memtest86 now to ensure that my memory isn't causing my problems.
At this point, I'm very suspicious of my VIA SATA controller. I don't know if I can install a single drive on my Promise controller, but if Memtest86 doesn't pick up any problems, this will be my next attempt.
If the Promise controller isn't an option, I'll just boot to an IDE drive and see what happens.
This MB is so much more picky than my nForce2 and Mobile Barton setup.
I did 3 successful Memtest86 tests... so it's not my memory!
I tried my Promise SATA controller... Win XP gave me the BSOD.
I've tested my SATA HD with the Western Digital diagnostics tools.... no errors.
This is so frustrating.
I'm going to install the OS on an IDE drive and see what happens.

wow, very nice scores for stock Maxvla
w/ some OC that should be quiet good:)
To follow up, I was able to post some comparable scores. I had a lot of trouble and found that it was due to the MB not liking a single stick of my BH-6 memory... two sticks was okay, one stick = problems.
I swapped memory and I scored 20098.
This MB is *very* picky. There is virtually no OC room.

How do you manually set fsb:dram cpu? I can't get mine out of fsb:dram cpu/22

lets see this thing overclocked. i oc'ed my 3200 and "beat" you on some of the more CPU intensive tests, but your 9800 just blew my 5900 outa the water.
