i just got my hands on this d-link 8 port switch(DSS-8+) that i want to use for my 3 computers.on the box it says i can go directly from my pcs through the switch so i took of my router.i plugged my cable modem into port 1 on the switch my computer in port 3 and the other 2 computers in 4 and 5.my computer works fine but the other 2 wont work.i can see activity going to the other 2 computers via the leds on the switch but i cant get the other 2 on line.thanks for the help

the switch is not a NAT so it tries to use multiple ip addresses, one for each computer that the modem can see. you need a router to mask all of the computers behind the router, unless your isp gives you multiple ip addresses, which yours does not. You still do need to use your router

thanks for the info. would it be any better using the switch and router rather than just the router

yes, if you need to use more computers than there are ports on the router
