Hi guys,
Here's my first post, yippie. I've been reading this board for a while and I've been learning all I can, even overclocking when I have the time. Currently running a Duron 700 on an Asus A7V motherboard, when I put this machine together I spent on the good stuff (motherboard and RAM), and got a cheap chip, as they drop in price soo dang quick. Anyway, I'm about to shell out for a 1.4ghz Athalon, and I'm wondering just how hot is too hot?

My temperature monitor consistently reports MB temps of 30-32C, and CPU temps of 58-61C. (I'm using the ASUS PC PROBE that came with the mother board). So how hot is too hot? I've seen guys who shut down their PC when it hits 60C, but I'm running 61 most of the time. So, how hot is too hot? I'm intending to go all out when the new chip gets here, and while I am getting some new cooling equipment as well, I would like to have an idea of where to draw the line. Thanks in advance for any help, I've learned a lot here, but couldn't find a post about this, thanks-

you're temps seem pretty high just like mine but it's supposed to be a common thing for my MSI K7T Turbo board. My temps stay around the 48 to 54 C with Duron 900 using an ALPHA PAL6035. I think the temps shown in my bios is incorrect. On another board they were 8-9 C lower. Check if it's not your board or otherwise get better cooling cause that 1.4 Ghz Athlon is gonna burn you away if those temps are real.

By the way, welcome to the forum!

Welcome to the forums PhattieD

The Asus probe is notorious for reporting temps up to 10c higher than they actually are. Motherboard monitor 5 should be a bit more accurate and it also has tons more features. I would consider 60c the absolute max temp I would feel comfortable with. When I used aircooling on my duron 600 running @ 1100 2.11v my temp would max out at 60c but never any higher. What heatsink are you using? I highly recommend a Golden Gate from svcompucycle.com especially if you get a 1.4 athlon. For $20-30 depending on the fan its one of the best coolers for your dollar.

Mine hit 51C with no case sides on it 1.33 at 1.5 if you have a fan blowing on it from AC its at 43C

Thanks for the tips ya'll, I'm downloading those monitors as we speak, should be interesting to see what I'm really at. Definitely going to get a serious heat sink/fan when the 1.4 gets here...time to go read up on those! Thanks again-PhattieD
