Just got me a new setup with an ASUS CUV4X-D, 2x P3 1gig and 1048mb SDRAM pc133... Running Win 2000 pro, Adaptec 131U2 Raid controller and 4x IBM 18gig 10Krpm U2W scsi HD, Iomega Zip 250 atapi intern, Plextor 40x CDROM scsi, Plextor PX1210S scsi, enermax 431w powersupply, Lian Li PC70 server tower
First 2 weeks I ran this setup with a single CPU, waiting for my supplier to get me a 'matching pair' . System was stable and bloody fast..
Now I have my 2 CPU's in and the whole thing is just SLOW..
Using mostly Photoshop and Illustrator, it is definelty slower with PS now, And Illustrator does start normally, but any action you take, whether it is switching tools or clicking on a new palette window takes about 2 MINUTES !! AAAAAAAAARGH !!!!!
As far as i know Win2000pro should support dual CPU's, right??
Please Help, I can't take out he second cpu for now as I left my 'dummy' at the store and they are closed for holidays until September 10....
Chris
Did you change your PC in device manager to support daul procs? I usually reinstall windows with a major upgrade like that, but changing the cpu from uniprocessor to multiprocessor in device manager should suffice.
If that doesn't work, reinstall!!

yeh, i get the same probel in win 98 whenever i change my processor or mobo, reinstall
Despite the fact of sounding repetitive.. I agree with pinky, also if its not the big of a problem, I'd just reinstall the whole works, might save you a bit of trouble later on down the road and solve some problems that may have accured also.

Youll also need twice the RAM as each CPU needs its own ram.

You don't really need twice the ram. But the more the better generally speaking. But, Pinky is right, you need to check that you're enabled dual support. 2K won't automatically do it by itself.

Thanks for all the advice, looks like re-installing will be the best/safest option. I looked everywhere (device manager, Bios, even recycle bin :-)) for a way to enable dual cpu, but couldn't find anything..
About the Dual RAM thing...I was planning on throwing in as much as I could, but my supplier told me to do it this way for now, since 512mb and 1gig modules aren't that reliable yet and a bit pricy too..when they become better and cheaper he will take these back for the same price (have it in writing :-) and I'll throw in either 2 gig or 4 gig.
I go for reliability and stability rather than top speed for now..
Thanks again,
Chris

Did a new install of W2k, this fixed the problem, but created another...
Error message at startup in bios saying:
Ínvalid bios update time, error 0000068A; 0000068A invalid.
So flashed the bios from 1007 to 1010 and now it's running like it's nuclear-powerd... hey, now THAT would be an extreme mod...
Anyway, thanks for the advice!
heh a computer having its own mini nuclear power station. But that would create problems because then you would need another computer to run the station then you would need another station to run that computer and so forth.:p

no no..we could use one of those smart mini nuclear fuel cells they have in all the sci-fi movies... no noisy powersupply, no cables..never worry about lightning again... And if you need to, you can jumpstart your car with your pc... how's THAT for multitasking??
Of course, by the time they build a cpu that'll need that much power, it'll have reached it's half life time, making it useless...
it's so much easier on star trek.......

Sweet! Now join the SETI, or Folding@Home team, or both, and quit wasting cycles...
glad to see youve got everything running properly again.

was thinkig about that....but it seems to me that folding is a bit more useful than seti (the truth is out there already, no need to find it, it'll come to us one day?)
So I'll get my machine to do some serious folding then :-)

You likely had somekind of configuration issue of conflict or perhaps you installed some piece of software that caused the problem. Anyway, you don't really have to reinstall win2k to go from the uniprocessor HAL to the multiprocessor HAL. You can go into device manager and click on computer and then change the driver from MPS uniprocessor to MPS multiprocessor or from ACPI uniprocessor to ACPI multiprocessor. You just can't change from MPS to ACPI. If you try to change between MPS and ACPI it can hose your system.
Also, you don't need twice the ram with a dual processor system. Of course more ram is always good, especially with photoshop and win2k likes ram also. I guess the reason people awlays come up with this myth about needing twice as much ram with a dual system is probably becuase often times people choose a dual system because it makes running multiple applications simultaneously much smoother and of course that would also work better with lots ram. Also, the applications that dual systems are usually used for generally like lots of ram. Anyway, at 1GB you should have adequate ram.
You guys kick butt!!! It is so nice to be able to come to a forum and be able to ask questions and get a viable answer. Most other sights that I have been to like to slam each other and run each others equipment down. But not on OC'ers.com Good job everyone and keep up the helpful work.
