View Full Version : overheating w/ doom3?
Ok i have this powercolor 9700pro and i can overclock it 363/330 and never have any artifacts. Until i bought doom3. After about 20min of play i start to see messed up triagles. I felt my card and it is hot. Can't leave finger on mem to long. So i set it back to stock speed. Still the same thing. :bang head So i ordered me a vga silencer and some ramsinks from newegg.
So my question is :
Is anyone else having heat issues w/ the doom3 or is it a driver issue or game issue?
Oh ya i get anywhere from 29-60+fps w/ my rig at 1024x768 all on high.

If you're doing this with the stock hsf, it's time to upgrade,..... try the vga silencer.

Doom III will test your vid card like no other!!
what settings where you running on?
If above Medium - then yes - Doom III will use every last Mhz of your GPU and bring it to it's knee's if it has the chance to!

yeah i had the same problem but with white dots so i calm down on the gpu mhz and its all good and thats with ultimet settings in 1280 by 1024 (20-60fps), doom 3 isnt that bad with graphics cards if you try paramiter it will overheat your card i couldnt even overclock a bit with that game.
Well even at stock speed i still get these artifacs. Um guess there hasn't been a game until doom3 that really worked a card to it max. Hope the vga silencer and ramsink help. :bday:
This dang game make me have to upgrade all my cooling. ;)
Just upgrade my cpu's heatsink from a coolmaster heatpipe to this slk-974u. Big difference.
I have a Radeon 9700 Pro and can attest to the fact that it does get pretty warm when running Doom 3, and mine's never been overclocked.. Would definately try the extra cooling.

Have you actually tried backing off your CPU overclock? When I first installed FarCry on my rig (same stuff as below but with a super-overclocked 9800Pro), I got random black triangles. I kept underclocking the video card over and over until I was below stock, at which point I almost thought the card was faulty...
Turned out I had heat issues with my CPU (I wasn't watercooled at the time). A little more work on ventilation and I was back in action with my overclocked card.

I installed a vga silencer on my 9600 Pro AIW (overclock in my sig) - I am playing Doom 3 at 1024 X 768, medium detail and the game is very playable. I did have problems initially with the Catalyst drivers (4.7) so at the suggestion of someone here I installed the Omega Modified 4.7 drivers and WDM driver- fixed all of my problems.
Here is the Omega link-

May help to remove stock hsf and apply AS5 instead of the regular heattape under there.
Can lower temps 5 or so degrees.
Well i ordered the vga silencer and some ramsinks from newegg. Will use some as5 when they get here. Hope this helps.

Forgot to mention i am using 4.9beta's for doom3.
Just for reference, a few weeks ago Carmack had a quote about how doom III will use transistors on your card that have never been used before. It mostly pertains to Nvidia, but I'm sure its the same thing for ATI.

This is just the beginning. Imagine what HL2 and STALKER will bring.

I love when the next gen games start rolling in, in a big pile.
