i downloaed the mew memtest, and it came in a compressed format.

what do i need to put on a floppy for it to work as a boot disk ram tester?

If you've donwloaded the correct file, there is a boot disk creator in it. just start it and follow instructions.

maybe i'm missing something, but i don't get it.

i downloaded teh pre-compoled file, and it was zipped.

do i just copy the memtest.bin file to a floppy? stick it in and reboot? or do i have to copy other stuff?? there's an install.bat, readme.txt, and rawrite.exe

If I remember correctly, run the install, but have a floppy ready. I believe that it wil ask you what drive you want to use for the install. Select your floppy (obviously) and it will install it. From there, you simply insert the disk while the PC is shut off, or while you are in your BIOS screen and boot. It will load memtest and immediately begin to test. There are some test selection options, if you choose, otherwise it will test in loops. The link below is to a very good discussion on using Memtest.

i tried the install, but a cmd window cam up for a second, then closed. nothing happened.

I'm not sure why you are having troubles, but I would suggest starting over. Download new files, either memtest86 ver 3.1a or memtest86+ ver 1.20 (86+ just has a few more bits of info displayed like chipset and memory timings). Decompress these files to a temp file or wherever and then when you execute the install feature, it should open a DOS type window asking you which drive you want to install the program in. Type in the letter of your floppy drive, hit enter, and it takes it no time at all to install. Close the window and your floppy should be ready for use. Below are links to the downloads that use the floppy method.

http://www.memtest.org/download/1.20/memtest86+-1.20.floppy.zip

Good luck.
