Hi, I have a Celeron 466@66 FSB and I'm not sure if it's safe to overclock it without extra cooling. I have gone into BIOS and changed it to 75FSB for a clock of 525 and it seems to run ok without extra cooling except it causes slight instability. The highest setting in BIOS that I can do is 83 FSB, which would give me a clock of 581. Can someone give me advice on whether or not it is safe to try 83 FSB with no extra cooling? I run Windows 98 Second Edition with 256mb RAM.

Thanks.

I have windows 98 lite too. the second edition too. And I have 256mb or ram too. I wouldn't go any higher than that. It would be kinda risky. Spend the extra 35 dollars and get a realy good cooling system like the sk-6 heat sink. It is 35 dollars. Dont complain of the pricre. I bought it when iut was 70. ouch...

I would rather spend the extra 35 dollars rather than burning out youyr chip. Good luck. if you dont want to spend any money, just keep it where it's at.

You may want to monitor your temps with MBM (available from here (http://speshalk.dyndns.org:1812/programs/)). Once you verify thing's aren't running too hot, you can raise your voltage in .10v increments up to 2.30v MAX to increase stability.

The lower the better... higher voltage = higher heat generated.

It seems like those celerys don't clock high. But my celeron 433 does run 83fsb@540 at default voltage and with the puny Gorb (which i replaced). I really want 650 but won't run, tried huge p4 sink and even peltiers. Oh well, anyway at 540 a bench up to 33% faster. With a good sink/fan you can probally do 83fsb.:D

The problem with a bus speed as high as 83 is that it runs your AGP and PCI bus and cards way out of spec. To those of you who can boot 83. I am happy for you but, the ones who can't know what I am talking about.

Might want to get an SK-6 and a 72 watt peltier if you really want to see what that celeron can do but then your going to moveing into harder cooling. So if you can't see yourself spending thet money then I'd just get the SK-6. Myself as soon as I get the cash I am going water cooling.

Well I ordered a P3 933 and I bought this peltier for $3 off ebay so I'm just basicaly playing with my celery until my P3 arrives.

Thanks for all the input.

is it very risky for me to try and boot at 83fsb? ive done 75fsb many times before with only slight system instability.

Well 83 is risky, so I hear. I have some pci/isa cards too. I tryed to get all recent new cards hoping to have them survive 41Mhz. I replaced all but my isa SB-16 soundcard. All that does is have annoying clicks when it plays sounds. Anyway my cards are;
ESS 56k v90 modem - handles it great
Iwill ultra wide scsi adapter - handles it great
SB-16 isa- Handles it poorly
Radeon VE agp - no problem here.

83 is risky if you have older cards but sometimes it the only choose if you can't hit 100.

nahh my old 3com isa network card did quite fine when i had my celly 466 running at 83. its your hard drives that are gonna crap out. trust me.

My ide harddrive was fine. Good thing my other one is scsi and I got a nice card. I remember reading that almost all new cards can handle 40Mhz.

Oh as for burning a celeron, My celeron took many a high temp beating and even a water short beating and it keeps on ticking. As long as you have a good sink and good air flow to it, ever if the fan dies you shouldn't lose your celeron. That's why I don't go AMD, to risky for my blood.

I forget where it was but someone wanted to know my temps 433@540 1.9v. I will post them soon, I am in the process of getting a good temperature reader going, to bad radio shack doesn't make their indoor/outdoor thermometer anymore.

Well if your screen dosen't come up say you get something like "No Signal" then turn off you system jumper the Cmos setings back to default. It should be a single jumper near the battery. Go back in and reset your settings. I don't think just trying to post a something small like 83 or 84 would nuke anything. (It shouldn't but their is like a very small chance that it could but hey were overclocker were ready for things like that to happen.)
