I bought my system not to long ago and I don't really know very much about Athlon Processors. I keep hearing everyone talk about the Athlon 4 and the Palomino or something like that. What is the difference between the T Bird, Athlon 4 and the Palomino?

Welcome to the forums!

now go check AMD Processors for responses to this, as I'm moving it there. =)

The Athlon 4 is the successor to Tbird
The Athlon 4 is code named Palomino and comes in 2 types, the Athlon 4 and the Athlon 4 MP. The MP incorporates Smart MP Technology - so as it functions in a dual processor board such as the Tyan Thunder K7 - and TLB (Translation Look-Aside Buffer). The Athlon 4 (Palomino) for desktop and mobile systems also has TLB and will have SSE1 and be a lower wattage chip.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. So is the regular Athlon 4 Palomino better for overclocking since it has a lower default voltage?

It'll be a much better cpu overall because it's the next generation, but for now, I would stick to your current one. it's fast enough and the athlon 4 wouldn't be too much faster...at least for the next few month.

I don't mean to be arguementative - but the Palomino is an awesome chip. I run 2 machines, using the Palomino MP chips - Tyan Thunder K7 with 2x 1.0@1.0 and the Epox 8K7A with the Palomino MP 1.2@1.512 (168x9). The Epox setup is unbelievable. Compared to my ABIT KT7A-Raid with AYHJA Y 1.4@1.628 (155x10.5), the Palomino is about 30% more powerful in SETI crunching. It also kicks the crap out of my ABIT TH7 P4 1.5@1.680 with pc800 Rdram by about 25% on Seti units.

But the Athlon 4's that are coming out in the next 60 days - the 1.5 and the 1.6 will kick the crap out of what I have now.
