View Full Version : The 1.4 AYHJA That Couldn't (or wouldn't)
Well, I cleaned out my watercooling system (I'll do a separate post on that ordeal) and replaced my little Duron 650 @ 1000 with my new T-Bird 1.4 266. I was stoked figuring I would easily hit 1700mhz with my watercooled and VMODed system. Well, I had to go to 2.0V just to hit 1600Mhz. This T-Bird is an AYHJA "Y" week 26. I'm pretty disappointed.
I tried various BIOS revisions on my KT7AR hoping one of the later ones would help. I went from WW to 3R, and from 3R to 4B0 (the new beta). Both 3R and the new Beta caused my system to idle at 45C and max out at around 49C. My PC sits under my desk at my feet and was practically making me break out in a sweat. I have since flashed back to WW and temps now idle at 31C and max out at around 49C. Much more comfortable in the room that way. Hopefully I won't have problems with that BIOS rev. WW has tended to be the best one for me.
One oddity. I'm not sure if this is the new chip or not, but my system now has trouble capping and playing MPEG-2 files. I was testing the system with my ATI AIW 128Pro and can cap at any resolution or compression except MPEG-2. 640x240 will cap but with no sound, 640x480 completely locks up the system. This didn't happen with my Duron, but I can't remember if I've capped since added in Win2K SP2. I may drop the Duron back into the system to test it. If it works with the Duron then I know I just got a bad Processor for some reason, although I find this unlikely.
Oh well, I guess I should be happy with 1.6Gigs, although I didn't notice much of a difference in "everyday use" speed. Word and Excel open a little faster, and windows open a tad faster. I'm sure video encoding will be faster as well. It was still worth the $100 price, but would not have been worth more than that.
I'll post some benchmark pics tonight.

I dunno about the OC problem but the capping problem i might help u about.
I also capped nice with my miro pctv card at high resolutions but after i too installed sp2 it started dropping frames + other weird problems occured. Had to reinstall win2k to get i working again:(
So i think the only solution is too reinstall win2k to get rid of the buggy service pack2.

I was afraid SP2 was the problem. Did you have to do a complete format and reinstall, or did you just install over the top and keep all settings?

Hmm i didnt format but did a clean reinstall of win2k.
I think u gotta do a clean reinstall to get rid of sp2.
Yeah, that bites. I run mine at 1.6 GHz down the basement with the temp idling at around 43C and getting to 47C under load. But that's air cooling with a Thermalright SK6 and a 40 cfm YS Tech fan. I'm using a Shuttle AK31V2.
I brought it upstairs to download some OS updates and had to lower it to 1575 MHz due to the higher ambient temperature. It was right across from my PIII 700 @ 994 MHz rig and there no sense at all that the Athlon is any faster. Normal Windows crap runs the same, but the temperature difference is kinda funny. The PIII is idling at 20C (running Rain 2.0) while the Athlon is sitting at 45C - quite a difference.
Regarding your MPEG-2 problems, a friend at work was having some problems also. I built him a 1.2 GHz Athlon rig with an Iwill KK266 mobo a few months ago. He is also running Win2K SP2 with an ATI AIW Rage 218 card (PCI not AGP) so maybe that's the problem. I have no real idea what the problem is, but just though you'd like to know you're not the only one.

I had the same problems with my new 1.4 AYHJA-y week 25. This thing was not worth the money I paid for it so I returned it. It had a hard time going to 1.620. I can get this with my current 1 gigger. I will wait for the 1.533 to make another CPU upgrade.

hey AMD Guy not sure but I'm getting the same issues with the video capture in Win2k. I have an ATI AIW Pro w/8megs (whoo hooo!). Anyway when I downloaded their ATIPlayer it tells me that it's a beta version for win2k and may not be supported...I attributed it to that..
/shrug
Same results here with a 1.33GHz AYHJA. At 1.87V I am only getting 1520 stable with WC. I can take it higher say 1530 or may be 1540, but that requires 1.97V. All in all this chip does not o/c higher than my 1Gig AXIA.

It appears the cap problem can be attributed to the SP2. I'm going to try to uninstall that. If I can't, I'll just wait for XP next month before wiping and reinstalling.

Mine also did only 1544mhz with a fop38 and a housefan. Temp=45c idle 48c loaded.
at defaul voltage which is 1.75 but shows 1.81 in winblows.
Tried upping it to 1.85 to get 1.6g but no luck and also still shows 1.81v in winblows, so i dunno whats wrong with this asus a7v133 board. Seems like i cant change voltage on it even when it says so in bios.

Concerning the MPEG2, I used to have all kinds of problem with that. I am running a 1.2 Ghz at 1378 Mhz (145x9.5) with Abit KT7A. I could capture most videos from my digital camcorder fine, it was capturing in avi format. But when I ran the conversion to MPEG2, my system would hang or blue screen, everytime. Also DVD would not play, same thing hangs or blue screen. But I'm running Windows 98 SE though. It drove me insane. I bought a new PS, lower my CPU speed to 1000 Mhz, reinstall Windows98 about 3 times. Nothing helps. Then I upgraded to BIOS 3R and the 4in1 version 4.32. All my problems were solved. Don't know if it was the BIOS or the 4in1 update that did it.
i really regreat that i bough a board with the stupid via chipset....
Seems like it got all sorts of strange bugs specially multimedia like capturing/videoediting and problems with soundcards like the sblive card.
Next time im gonna buy a card with the amd760 chipset.
I have had all sorts of strange problems with both my abit kt7 , the asus a7v133 mobos with videoediting...... While it was working fine on a wintel pc with intel chipset but not on my friends pIII with via chipset, even worse than the kt133a.

Bugger... I have a week 26 1.4 gig AYHJA lying around, waiting to be put in my new watercooled system with a KG7-RAID (hopefully I'll build it this w/e). Just hope it does a little better - I was praying for 1600 out of mine, I didn't want to hope for too much in case I was disappointed :(

I wish you luck, but it looks like the later week T-Birds aren't doing so great. I still think it was worth the $100 I paid, but I'd have been upset if I'd paid $179 like they were two weeks ago.
1.6Gigs for $100 still ain't bad. It woulda been a lot more fun if it'd gone higher.

Im sure im gonna get to the 1.6g mark with some more voltage, since its 100% stable on 1544mhz at default volt. thats on multipiler 11,5, fsb 134,30.
For some reason i dont get any chances in core voltage when upping from 1.75 too 1.85:|
Also i might hit higher if i had some better ram?? It just wont boot winblows on multipilere 12x or higher

What's the code and week of your T-bird? I was pretty sure mine would hit atleast 1700, but it didn't. The majority of the people with a week 24 - 26 1.4 seem to have troulbe OCing them even though they are AYHJA "Y" chips.
1544 at stock voltage is great. I never tried any other settings. I went straight from 1.4 to 1.6. It would POST at 1.6 and stock voltage but would spontaneously reboot. It would make it to windows at 1.85, but Windows would crash. I would run Windows at 1.90, but 2.0V was required to run Prime95 without errors. I'm gonna let it sit at 1.6 for a week or so and see if a little burn in will help it along.
I think my temps are pretty good. 32C at idle and 53 after Prime 95 Torture for a couple of hours. The highest I've seen it get was when running McAfee Virus Scan on my entire network. It got to 55.4C according to my thermal probe.

Yep that's a week 28. Maybe those came off a better silicone pad or something. You'd think there wouldn't be much difference in 2 weeks LOL.
