I have been trying to overclock the Fsb on my not so good A&M266 and the best it will do is 145 and still be able to boot into Windows. The ram that I have is 2 sticks of 256MB Crucial PC2100 Registered ECC. I was wondering if maybe I bought the wrong stuff to be overclocking. Is unbuffered better then registered for overclocking? And is ECC ram slower the regular non-ecc ram and how good is it for overclocking? Thanks

ECC memory is a bit slower than non-ECC memory and is usually only used in servers. The reason ECC is a bit slower is because it takes an extra penalty cycle when it encounters an error. registered memory is also slower than unbuffered memory because registered memory delays the processing of information by one clock cycle, and is also mostly used in servers. Also registered and ECC memory is more expensive than the the faster unbuffered non-ECC memory. But all these types of memory modules should be overclockable. Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the info. I guess I bought the wrong stuff when I bought Registered ECC DDR. Do you think that is why I am not able to get high FSB clock speeds?

Are you able to increase the memory voltage?

In my case if I step the memory voltage down from +0.4 to +0.3 the maximum stable FSB speed drops from 165 to about 150.

Also, I've heard some people say that they were able to overclock higher when using just one stick of memory rather than two.

Hope that helps...

The default VIO1 voltage is 2.7. It is only adjustable to 2.7, 2.8 or 2.9. So I should move the jumper to 2.8 and see what kind of FSB speed I can get with the higher voltage?

What are you running your memory at CAS2 or 2.5 , it comes default CAC2.5 , Crucial DDR that is.

I've heard that is you run crucial at default cas setting 2.5 you can run your memory stable at high fsb speeds. This is something I've heard I haven't tried this yet , its just a thought.

I think that there is something wrong with something on my system becuase no matter what latency I use, 2.5 or 2 I still get the same clock speeds. First I used the default voltage of 2.7 and I get a max fsb of 142, then I tried 2.8 and I get 146 at most. Last I tried the 2.9 setting with the same end result as the 2.8. So the best FSB I can get is 146. I think that I need to buy me an EPOX 8HKA (I think that is the name of the board).
