I bought a celeron 433 ppga about a year ago. I was able to clock it at 540 with Gorb no prob at default voltage and thats pretty good. I recently bought a huge p4 sink hoping to post 100fsb at 650. With catch off I was able to post windows 1 out of every 10 or so tries but it benched slower than a 486. So I stopped.
part two.
I bought a p3 933 so I thought I would go all out to reach my goal of 650.
I recently picked up a peltier heatsink/fan for slot-1s for $3 on ebay yes $3. The person selling didn't know what he was selling I just knew from the pics. Well anyway, I upgraded the fan on the heatsink and slaped on thermal grease and loaded it on my celeron. It runs fine @ 540 and passes CPU burn-in with a heatsink thats not hot at all. I tryed 650 but same s**t . I gave it 2.2v still no good. Well I'm going to buy some gaskets tonight and try again, any suggestions?
Not really a suggestion but a comment. The old PPGA Cellies sucked at overclocking. I still have a 466 somewhere (haven't seen that thing in a year...but it's around) that wouldn't hit any higher than 525 stable.
The old slot 1 Cellies and the newer Coppermines are about the only decent overclockers to ever come out sans a few lucky ones that are few and far between of the old PPGAs.
Could try lapping the core on it. Just be careful, but they are easier to lap due to the fact it is so large and quite a bit more rugged than today's Coppermines.

Any good links on lapping. I never did it and don't want to mess up the CPU.
Lapping is a good thing to do. I´ve don it to a Cel PPGA 400, and it runs really well at 570 2.3V. I´m sure it can pass the 600 mark, but it´s my brothers comp, and he doesn´t want a watercooler or a loud fan.
I´ve lapped also a Cel 333A Slot1, and it rocked at 500 2.4V for two years. Still have it, but at 416 on a LX board (won´t go higher).
Also lapped a Cel 600 FCPGA. Not much of an improvement, but didn´t ruin the chip either.
I say lapping really works. I´m trying to find some info on it, so i´ll post a link.

Cel 433...my experience was:
2,2V 433@541 rock stable (Asus P2V no bios softfsb)
voltage test from 2,2 up to 3,6 (...slot1 voltage trick...)
burn-in burn-in burn-in burn-in
3dmark 3dmark 3dmark 3dmark
lapped lapped lapped lapped
big big heatsink with big big fan
Result:
433@650...boot...i enter in the bios
stop
never never never never seen Windows working
using new mobo with soft bios, the result was worth
watercooling and peltiers never tested
Slayer logo Satan?
If I'm not mistaken there is a guide to lapping on the Overclockers.com front page. Check there first.
Almost positive I remember seeing one there. Could be contained in another guide too though.

Yes Slayer it is! The first one the say that.:D
Well I accully booted windows a few times at 650 with no cache but extremely unstable and doesn't bench higher than a 486. But after running 540 @2.1~2.2. I run stable at 540 @2.0v with heatsink always cold. Benchs up to 30% higher at 540 too.
I benched it with a peltier @ 540 and noticed the floating points seemed slightly higher is that because of a colder temp or just a coincidence.

I have a 433 currently running 540 @ stock voltage. The theoritical limit for the mendicino (sp?) core was 550 MHz. Haven't seen too many people get above that without the above mentioned extreme cooling methods. At least you've got a core that pushes the limit!

OK I think i realize 650 is immpossible unless I want to coat my board in wax and dip it in a container of liquid nitrogen.
I gasketed my peltier today and went for my last try at 650. I am able to get into windows with L2 cache off but it is the most unsable thing ever and take a good 10 min to load. Almost loaded win with cache in but no luck.
But here's the good news, I am very happy at 540 especialy at 1.9v when the default is 2.0v! I haven't tryed lower but I will soon. Well I'm retiring this CPU this week so I want to test it to the extremes before I put my P3 in.:p
I'm wondering what temps you are getting at these speeds, and what kind of memory timmings you are useing, perhaps some more relaxed timmings may help your cpu get a few more mhz, and as far as dissabeling the l2 cach, thats pretty much tieing both hands behind its back, I wouldnt expect much out of it, even if you got it stable.
Better luck on that new p3 :)

As far as the L2 cache, getting into window at 100fsb is a great task with a 433. I just wanted to do it to see if I could stable windows @ 650. I wouldn't keep it @ 650 I just wanted to see if I could make it.
