Anyone ever strip the plastic head off of the external portion of a RadioShack or otherwise thermometer and have it survive? I just picked up a really cheap Epox board but it's got no CPU sensor which I really don't like.
Is this possible? I really would like a cheap means of determining an average CPU temp. I'm also wondering what the thermosister is like within this plastic head...could it be stuffed between a CPU and hsf???

More than likely it has the bulbous head like the ones inside CPU sockets...I doubt that it has the flat thermistor like the one that you want to get under the HSF.
Only way is to tear it apart and see.....

Well...I carefully used an exacto knife and removed the outside plastic shell...only to find that the inside was completely filled with this hard glue-like substance.
It was opaque enough to see that you were in fact correct...it's the bulb type. I stripped back as much as I could..gonna go at it w/ my dremel when I have more time.
I was able to stick it in the slot where the Heat sink rises to clear the socket. Not good placement but it's showing 35c on a Duron 850@1020@1.85v w/ an FOP38. Makin' that FOP work baby!! Gonna get some pictures this weekend...Thanks for the info!

Yeah, just be careful how much you trim back. I shorted a couple of pins on my cel 400, resulting in an incease in vcore. I had trimmed too much of the insulation off, and exposed bare leads.

My mom got one of those to check the accuracy of the thermostat in the house, that is UNTIL I STOLE IT and started testing certain areas of my case to monitor air flow.

I took the caseing off mine, but the thermistor fell off and I lost it. Anyone know if its fixable, I dont know what thermistor to stick on the end. It only had one screen anyway, and a switch to go between indoor/outdoor.
I picked up a new one today from the goodwill store for $7. Its a spring field precisetemp, has 2 screens, but I realized its not indoor/outdoor but just indoor with both humidity and temp reading. Well it looks nice so I quess I'll just mod it for my CPU and be the only one that monitors case humidity. Still, new for $7 I can't go wrong.
Oh for the person that asked, $15-20 is the going price for a standard in/outdoor. But radio shack discontinued their old model for a newer model thats $35. So just go to the local hardware store.
