I started running sys monitor cpu kernal usage in win98se. After running a couple of programs it settled at 30 percent while the computer is doing nothing, or so I think. Run a couple of more programs and it settles at 50%. I can't believe this is true but if so, idle is not always idle.
Does anyone know what is going on here??

Any flavor of Windows will constantly be doing something unless you put your computer into "Sleep", or "Suspend".

OK, I looked at what is running using "CTR-ALT-DEL", just after power up. Inorder from top it was "Explorer-Realplay-systray-hidserv-mdm-winampa". Running sys monitor puts thta at the top of the list. Usage just after turning comp on is 0-2%.
Then ran a song with winamp. Usuage was 2 to 5%. HOWEVER, when I just winamp down the usage went up to 50% and stayed there.
I find it hard to believe its using 50%, but if you have win98 you should try this to see your results. It appears when programs are closed that the usage is up. BTW, the list of programs is the same when its just started up, or when its drawing 50%.

This has also bugged me! When I tried to ctrl-alt-del everything & just leave explorer & systray running I still get at least 30% of cpu usage. It might be just a bug in our version of W98SE 'cause if you check the temps of your CPU its probably in its idle temps whatever it maybe,at least mine is. If it were really going 50% or even 80%,like what happens on my system sometimes, the temps will be up.

Maybe the programs loaded are buggy themselves. Some programs I have, including a couple of games (can't remember), still continue to occupy CPU time although it has been shut down. Sometimes, IE causes a surge in CPU usage for no apparent reason (for awhile) and everything slows to a grind.
