View Full Version : Newbie O/Clocker seeks knowledge....
OK How many people out there have a similar set up to an socketA 1gig on an EPOX kta3+ board? What is the best easiest way to O/C the chip? is it in the bios with my voltage settings or is it more complicated than I think? I do not want to do anything that could cause damage without knowing what I am doing first so I can better make the choice to do it or not. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

ok... after you find out how to chagne your FSB and multiplier settings (look at or mobo manual) you may follow these simple steps:
1. Max Front Side Bus Speed in small increments of 5 while benchmakring often.
2. When FSB hits is maxed start pushing the multiplier, if that hits the top (not stable) increase voltage not more than 1.9 unless you have excellent cooling.
3. Make Sure the temperature is running 50ishºC and bellow @ stock. Done!
NOTE: If your preformance goes down during the peak speeds even if it doesn't crash you should go back to the best preforming state.
NOTE: This is only 1 method of o/c, you can also o/c by maxing your multiplier although it will not increase your overall system preformance and you will not feel the power.
NOTE: This is an outline, do not rely only on this, go read some more about the backround of your CPU, how it works and how it reflects on temps.
I read over the beginners stuff, it kinda made sense - I will go through my MOBO Book and just look for the square hoel for the square peg then try the 20 pound sledge on it - gently of course :D Also what do you know about RAM?? I have a small problem there too... I use ONLY micron MT ram (cas3, pc133, 256mb) If I use three of these chips I get the BSOD saying I am low on memory but if I go to two chips then a third of a different size say #3 being a 64mb of Micron - it runs fine. What gives????? Why does it do that?

YOU HAVE THE GREATEST LEARNING MEDIA IN HISTORY RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU. READ READ READ. THEN YOU WILL HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE ADVICE THAT IS READILY AVAILABLE IN THIS FORUM. OVERCLOCKING IS NOT AN EXACT SCIENCE NO 2 CHIPS ARE THE SAME. THAT IS WHAT IS SO NICE ABOUT THIS FORUM IF YOU ASK A SPECIFIC QUESTION YOU WILL GET A LARGE VARIETY OF RESPONSES FROM FACT TO EXPERIENCE TO EDUCATED GUESSES. YOU STILL HAVE TO FIGURE IT OUT AND GET DIRTY. JUST BEWARE THAT ONCE U START U MAY NEED THEARAPY TO STOP. IS THERE AN OVERCLOCKERS ANONYMOUS? I CAN JUST IMAGINE CONVERSATION. HAVE FUN......! AND REMEMBER THERE ISN'T A LIMIT UNTILL IT QUITS.

For some reason certain configurations of ram don't work.
I notice almost everyone in here is an ASUS or ABIT user... EPOX seems to be a big underdog, the KTA boards are awesome I have teh KTA3+ that also has onboard raid and 4 ram slots - I can use three slots if the chips are double sided or all four if slots 3 and slot 4 are in use by matching single sided ram.... and it supports up to 1.5gig of ram. 3 sticks of 256mb is only half of that ability.
Did some tweaking and got her up to 1.1gig and at 146mghrtz
more tweaking to come!

to successfully use more than 2 sticks of ram they must be registered ram, only 2 are allowed if they have no buffer. (unregged)
