First of all I hope this is being posted in the right place.

Ok , a few days ago I decided to do a little lapping on my SK6 , my temps were alittle high 44c loaded at default settings. Anyway everything turned out fine I got a 2c decrease in temps which allows me to run my 1.2@1.3@44c fully loaded , great.

Well today I was noticing my system temps were about 2c higher than normal so I checked my fans cleaned them a little (they were not dirty just dusty) after I went ahead and played a Gaints for maybe 30min after wards I checked to see the highs and lows via MBM and my high was 46c and my system was 33c, SOB.

Well I was wondering what could be happening here so I just took out my mobo then removed my hs. Ok , here's the strange part my hs had AMD ATHLON and part of the stepping burnt into it ?!?! I don't know how this could happen because my cpu never even rosr above 46c , now I'm not knowlegable about metals and their melting points but I know that copper wount melt at 118 F heck I've played golf in hotter weather.

I went ahead and re lapped my hs and aplyed a slightly thicker layer of AS2 and I guess I'll just hope this doesn't happen again.

Has anything like this ever happened to anybody else?

Nope!

Sounds pretty serious if the logo's burning off onto the heatsink.....

Its like carving the logo into the hs , I can run my finger across the hs and feel it grooved into the hs.

I wonder if I could sand the cpu core smoother or if I should just RMA this thing?

Do not sand that core because if you do they will not RMA it also if youhave the multi unlocked better lock it before you send it in

My Duron 800 does the same thing to my FOP38. And I didn't lap it. But I don't get temps higher than normal (36C under full load at stock, 25C ambient).

I'm intrested on how this can happen, aren't the logos carved in by lasers?

ok copper is quite a soft metal, perhaps its merely getting squashed in from the pressure of the heatsink pushing onto the core.... is there a mark/indentation where the edge of the core is?

Yeah, I got one of them.

ok, it sounds like its just pressure over time pushing into the metal, get a copper pipe hang wieghts on either end and balance it over another copper pipe, i expect it will bend the pipe over a couple of days/weeks. I dont think you should worry about it, as the copper is forming to the shape of the die, therefore you will get better contact, and a larger contact area! therefore it SHOULD run a little cooler, though i doubt this is detectable

I've not noticed any changes in temp, either for the better or the worse, so I'm not worried about it. Aluminum is a very soft metal, so like Random Nonsense said, it makes sense that it would mold around the core like that.

hmmmm i just had a crazy idea..... i'm gonna talk to a guy i know who can get hold of all sorts of crazy exotic metals... see if he knows anything that would wipe the floor with silver, or possibly even gold......

Well I would have to double check but I do believe there was a line directly above AMD ATHLON but not on the other side. Although the letters were much more defined then the mark made by the core's edge or atleast it sanded out faster. I was suprised at how difficult it was to remove those letter , they were very deeply burnt in.

Wa11y , your wright this actually has no afect on temps , the problem was my AC got turner up about 4f , after I turned it back down the temps were back to normal. :D

1.2@1.3(145x9)@44c full load :D

Now I can go back and working on getting 1.4 without upping the core volts.

I've had the writting on the core burnt into HSF's and waterblocks on numerous occasions. Never affected my temps any. I could still read everything on the core though. I could read it letter for letter on the HSF as well, LOL.

I've been seeing this since my first Duron a year and a half ago. I would think that it is due to the contact pressure on a soft metal and also the fact that with the fan attached there are probably slight vibrations that may cause the core to 'rub' the image onto the HSF. If you apply good grease it is supposed to fill in these types of voids that's probably why when the AC was lower it went back to norman. Interesting topic though!

I think I need to try and lap mine. I just got some sand paper on Sat to work on my oddessy.

I'll let ya know how it goes.

Lap on
