I just built a new computer. I got it all set up and now I can't get it to obtain dhcs addresses. It's stuck on Automatic Private Address. I can't get online with it at all. I've been messing around with it for the last 3 hours but no matter what I do, it resets itself to Automatic Private Address. What do I have to do to get it to obtain a DHCS address?

Just for future reference DHCS shoudl really be DHCP.
We need a little more information first.
1) Are you using dialup internet?
2) Are you connected to a router if you are using a network?
3) Have you reset your router and your broadband modem?

no, yes and no
I'm using cable. I'm using a Lynksis router. I didn't reset anything.
Try plugging your cable modem directly into your NIC and see if it runs, also make sure your NIC's drivers are installed. Lastly try running the internet connection wizard.

My cable modem will not obtain an address until the power is cycled. This is only necessary the first time I attempt to connect on a fresh XP setup and only with SP2 installed. Perhaps that's all you need to do, as was hinted at previously.

start up the command line. Type ipconfig /release > enter, then ipconfig /renew > enter, after the renew runs, type ipconfig >enter...
with the linksys rounter, it should show your ip address as 192.168.1.x If it doesn't you'll need to go into the router and check the dhcp settings.
Another option, you can set windows to use the ip address of your choice.
Right click My Network Places > select properties. Right click "local area connection" > select properties > double click TCP/IP
Select the radio button "use the following ip address"
input... 192.168.1.150 (or whatever number you want above 100)
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.1
You can leave DNS blank...hit ok.
Thats the usual basic setup for linksys...if that doesnt work, you'll need to troubleshoot your settings in the router further.

I tried connecting straight to the modem and that didn't work. Drivers are installed. I've run the internet connection wizard and network setup wizard 100 times. At one point the rest of my computers could see my new computer but couldn't access it. I still couldn't get online or see any of my computers on my new computer, though.
I just ran ipconfig /renew and this is the error I got:
An error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.

And manually entering everything didn't work either :(.

Are you using a regular patch cable and not a crossover? Can you ping the router?

Exactly, if you can't even ping the router, then there is a problem with the nic, drivers, cable, or even the cable router.
Have you tried to manually put in the ip address? Say you are connected to the Linsys and you manually put the ip say 192.168.1.5 and the subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and the gateway 192.168.1.1. If you did it manually, then you should be able to ping the Linksys wether you get DHCP or not, assuming everything is setup and working correctly.

It's definately a straight cable. I put everything in manually and still couldn't ping anything. I've got 3 other computers on my network that I set up myself with no real problems. This is the first major networking issue that I've come across that makes me want to throw my computer out the window. I downloaded updated drivers but naturally my cd burner suddenly decided that it doesn't want to burn any cds. After the 5th coaster I made trying to get them burned I gave up.
I guess when I get home from work tonight I'll just try installing another network card :(.

If it makes a differance the motherboard is an ecs 848p-a revision 1.0 and I'm using the onboard LAN. Did that motherboard have known LAN issues? If so were they fixed or do I need to forget about using the onboard LAN altogether?
