Cool. My digicam is a 2.1MP HP. You can't set ANYTHING, so I can't take any cool pics. I was trying to take pictures of Fireworks on the 4th of July and it looked like I was drunk, lol. Last couple of nights I was trying to take some pics of lighting... out of 50+ pics I got an amazing 0 shots of lighting :bang head
Lightning is incredibly hard to photograph.
Also, what happened to light up that area so suddenly?

I just put my camera to a 15 second shutter/exposure time and a flash came up while it was taking the pic.
Same thing as how I did this, I swear I did not photoshop anything.

So what you guys are saying is, if you turn the exposure to really slow, then it acts like night vision? I might have to invest in one of those expensive cameras so I can look for deer after dark, if you are about to say "Isn't that illegal?" then save your breath. If you have animals as pests, you can hunt at whatever time they are doing the damage at any time durring the season. With one of these cameras I can show them eating the greenbeans in the garden and I can finally get that nice 10 pointer that keeps teasing me up intill opening day when he goes and hides or something.

Night vision? lol, Hardy!!! The slow exposure only allows it to get as much light as possible, so if your own eyes can't see it, then the camera probably won't either.
Oh and BTW my camera was $250, but you can get it now for $100 or less...

Savage--do you know of a place where I can get that camera for that money? You're doing a good job of selling me on it! I have no digicam, just trusty SLR and I'm thinking I could use a nifty digicam that could do that!

You can't get the camera new anymore... its like really old. I think all normal point and shoot canon's have some manual features though.
As for the lighting.. that was under my desk from sunlight. I couldn't even see it that bright with my eyes.
Hope this will give you guys a better example... at night with my lights on.

08-22-04, 01:36 AM
i didnt mess with anything... im not even sure if the camera has much like that you can mess with. Its an older (prolly 6 years old at this point) digital video camera (cam-corder). Just pointed it in the direction of the lightning, recorded a bunch (most of it black), then captured it and took out the frames that looked cool.
Mine is only a Canon powershot A40. 2.0MP lol. I'm saving up for a Rebel though.
You'll love the Rebel if you like playing around with this stuff. Don't get the standard lens 'tho - just pick up the body and something like the Canon 24-85mm USM lens (which will be a ~35-135mm lens with that body/sensor).
WyrmMaster: Those lighting shots are really neat. I'm going to sit here and wait for a lighting storm now.
About 10 years ago I plunked down $700 for a nice Pentax SLR setup. Does Pentax make servicable SLR digicams? I could probably save some money and use the same lens if I did that...
I'm going to google now! :D
SavageBasher
08-22-04, 08:21 AM
400 bucks for that lens?!!! I'm only 16! :D I don't have that much to spend on it yet. I'll stick with the included lens, until I get better at using the manual features and all.
The lenses are the expensive parts really. My next photography purchase will be one of these (http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=150&modelid=9996) (to replace this (http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=150&modelid=7342)).
The new 20D looks really nice (8.2MP, 5fps for 23 frames, 9 point AF): http://www.dpreview.com/news/0408/04081909canon_eos20d.asp. And a nice new 17-85mm IS USM lens to go with it.

Somebody mentioned fireworks - I took this last week:
http://img31.exs.cx/img31/9374/IMG_3043.jpg
Canon 10D w/24-85 USM @24mm
ISO 400 (equivalent)
F/3.5
1/30
So you guys got me interested in this stuff again--and I went out and plunked down a couple of sawbucks on a Canon A75 that they have on special this week at Officemax. The wife's playing with it now. Nice camera. Uses compact flash, decent optical zoom, small, and has that neat panorama feature that Itshondo used in his post. Now... How can I overclock this thing to 3.5 megapixels?!
Lol. Good choice 'tho - IMHO the A75 is the best bang for the buck ATM.
On the subject of sensor noise I took these a little while ago to compare ISO values with my 10D. All shots are with the 75-300 IS lens @300mm, and F/8.0
ISO 100, 1/125 shutter speed:
http://img61.exs.cx/img61/9286/4353.jpg
ISO 200, 1/250:
http://img61.exs.cx/img61/4760/0200.jpg
ISO 400, 1/500:
http://img61.exs.cx/img61/8389/0400.jpg
ISO 800, 1/1000:
http://img61.exs.cx/img61/2500/0800.jpg
ISO 1600, 1/2000:
http://img61.exs.cx/img61/6537/4355.jpg
ISO 3200, 1/4000:
http://img61.exs.cx/img61/6505/4356.jpg
That's all handheld, hence the blur in the slower shots. Even with IS I find I usually need to shoot at 1/350 or faster using the lens at 300mm. I could have opened up the lens to F/5.6 and gotten a sharp image at ISO 200 but that would have overexposed the ISO 3200 shot (because 1/4000 is as fast as the camera will go) and I was trying to keep the apertures and exposures the same. One day I'll do it with a tripod.
Sometimes I shoot things at ISO 3200 just to get the noise, and then convert the pics into B&W to make them look old (24mm, ISO 3200, F/3.5, 1/8 - looks better full sized):
http://img65.exs.cx/img65/6947/IMG_3098.jpg
Not the best example, but it's all I have handy.

SavageBasher: I'd have bought the Rebel if it had been around when I was looking. Nikon has some nice dSLRs out now as well, but I already had Canon lenses so my choice was simple. The Rebels use the same CMOS sensor (not CCD as most if not all other cameras use) as the one in the 10D and IMHO it's worth every penny.

A Rebel with a half decent lens would take identical pictures - it's pretty much the same camera with a few features removed (and a smaller frame). I'm lucky enough to work on a boat so I get lots of travelling pics. With a large CF card you can just take ten pics of everything at different settings and throw nine of the ten away.
BTW all the pics I've posted were taken at the lowest resolution (1536x1024) - the equivalent of 1.6MP. It just goes to prove you're better off getting a 3MP camera with a good lens, sensor, and image processor (like the A75 :)) then a crappy 5MP camera for the same price.
Here's a 6.3MP shot of an EC tug:

I had to recompress the jpg to get it under 1024k for imageshack so it lost a little quality (original image size was ~3MB).

Do you set the white ballence, or do you leave that on auto?
Auto 99% of the time. I think the only time I've used it is when I'm shooting under fluorescent lights without a flash. Then again sometimes I'll shoot in RAW mode (which basically just stores the RAW data from the sensor) and pick the white balance etc using PhotoShop after I get the pic on the computer:

JCLW-
I have a friend that is color blind who is a pilot- you just have to get a waiver by demonstrating that you can ditinguish between a green and a red light (FAA)
My dad is a photography buff, and he is looking at a 16mp Nikon, its 2500 bucks! and it has loads of manual stuff!
BTW those photos are way freaking cool guys!
LOL, Nikon hasn't come close to 16mp (not being a brand hater, they make good stuff). The Canon 1Ds, full-frame 11mp, is $8000, too. The 1D Mark II, an 8.5 FPS 8mp camera of my dreams, is $4500. Yeah, =
Very nice photos, JCLW, I especially like the first one outside Halifax :). I find, though, it to be a lot more worth it for the entering photographer to get one or two cheap primes, instead of zooms, and force themselves to frame the world through them. You get much higher quality pictures and get more skilled- it's done wonders for me, I have the 50mm f/1.8 and the 24mm f/2.8. I used to have a 28-135 IS, but sold it and am now much happier. Partly its just because I'm a lens snob that can't deal with a max aperture not constant or less than 4 ;). It's really hard to describe, but when everything is simplified down to the one focal length, its so liberating, not restricting at all.
Oh, another thing...I ALWAYS shoot in RAW. The ability to correct is great in learning how to nail exposures, and helps even if you've done everything you could've. Also, the quality is much better.

I have a canon A70, and while I've taken close to 5000 pics with it during the last year, I just can't get used to the slow focus. It's really hard to take decent pics of moving objects.
Taken with my Panasonic Lumix DMC-F10 4.0MP.
Taken thru a dirty window, was part of the effect, But I don't like it. need to reshoot.
4second (1st) 8 second shutter (2nd), F8, 6x zoom (210mm), ISO400.

Same Camera and resolution in Amsterdam. No I didn't Photoshop the car...it IS that small!

I think I like the way the Cannon pictures turned out better. So far I am not too happy with the Kodak camera itself or the software that it uses. The Kodak has alot of problems with light issues on Auto. How is that Cannon because a few people recommended it to me. Which model did you guys buy and for how much?
itshondo: Even for commercial? I thought you could only get waivers for recreational. It may be different up here as well.
mateo: Nice pics :) I'm terrible at getting those action sports shots. Luckily for me boats don't move very quickly.
I considered a couple of primes but decided against it because on the boat it's not often I can change my distance relative to the subject - I also wanted to avoid changing lenses as much as possible in the salt water environment. Climbing up the mast or out on a yard with a bunch of different lenses is a PITA too. The 24-85 turned out to be a good choice for me, but sometimes I wish it was a bit wider (BTW for everyone else: The 10D does not have a "full frame" (35mm) sensor - it's only 22mm so all lenses get an extra 1.6x magnification - so the 24-85 lens becomes a 38-136 lens). I'd love a faster lens but ATM the zoom is more important and I don't have the $$ for a fast zoom (and I wouldn't want anything bulkier then the 24-85). I'd agree that primes are a good way to start 'tho.
I'm not that happy with the 75-300 IS. Its not that sharp, and the AF is terrible. The IS is the only thing that saves it. Unfortunately it was really the only thing in its price class (cheap) at the time. I used it on my film Rebel for a while as well. A while ago I managed to borrow a Tamron 2x teleconverter for an afternoon which turned it into a 300x2x1.6=960mm lens - not very sharp but lots of fun. Unfortunately it was really snowy that day so all I really have pictures of are white snowbanks.
TommyHolly: What firmware is in your camera? Here's a link to 1.03: http://wwwuk.kodak.com/global/en/service/downloads/dln_ekn.jhtml?ekn=EKN026347
The newer P&S Canons are the A75 and A80. mateo and I are using the 10D which is a digital SLR. The Digital Rebel is a nice dSLR as well - just a slightly cut down 10D.

Some pics from about 15 minutes ago...
Clouds were done in P mode (auto sets shutter and apperture, exposure can go down or up in 6 steps each) and the moon was down in manual, with ISO speeds of 50 and 100.

Thanks for the comments :) Yeah, the environment is the only thing that bites when doing the prime deal, and its gotten a little bit in the way now and then on trips and such, but I love them. My 28-135, even though it was my only lens with USM and is generally regarded as the best non-L zoom (although IMHO the 24-85 is slightly better, I got to try one out later on), felt so limiting and inferior, mostly due to the aperture, resulting dark viewfinder, distortion, and softness. Except, of course, that my 50's hood is awkward and that the lens feels cheaper than some of my 8 month old niece's toys...and probably cost less, too...
You're not alone with the complaints on the 75-300 IS, I've seen that from almost everyone who owns the lens. Even the new DO 70-300 isn't good or worth it- (un)fortunately, the only way to get real good telephoto is with L glass. A 70-200 f/4L is the best value there, hovering just under $600 with optics that can rival the $1600 f/2.8L IS (yes folks, lenses can cost more than small cars    ). Personally, I'm saving up for a 135 f/2L that with converters can effectively cover the range of the 70-200, isn't 8 long inches of conspicuous white, and that along with the 85 f/1.2L has unmatched sharpness and bokeh, period.
Not all digital SLRs cost +$1k. It's probably very possible that you can find a good D30 on eBay for less than a 300D/DigRebel- its "only" 3mp, but its the quality, not number, of pixels that count. As the first midrange Canon DSLR, it's generally revered, and I know people that prefer it over the Rebel. Now, especially with the introduction of the 20D, eBay prices might drop more, and these DSLRs might be even more accessible than before.

last I heard the guy was flying a Gulfstream. It is possible-
How about that 600mm f/4L IS?
I've got some good shots with the 75-300, but I don't know. I think I'd really miss the extra 100mm with the 70-200. I've heard decent things about the older 100-300, but I like the IS beyond 200mm, especially on a moving boat. The 100-400L is appealing (equivalent to 640mm :)), but a bit big & heavy and the push-pull zoom is annoying to use on a boat. I think I'll take a 70-300 DO for a test this fall.
I had an HP 618 for about a year, then it grew legs and walked away :(. IMHO it was a really good P&S digicam for its time, complete with full manual control. I got an HP 720 to replace it but it was junk.

I'm not sure what Software it was I was using. The Camera got fried when I tried recharging it using Europe's higher voltage. Also, the Camera's buttons were smashed in the luggage when I was traveling. It's cheaper to buy a new one than to have it repaired I was told so it just sits on my desk as a paperweight.

TommyHolly,
I have the Canon A80. Personally I like it, my wife loves it. It's got both P&S, and manual settings which is good for me. My wife just likes to take pictures... I like to play and learn. Supposedly the A75 is the best of both worlds between the A70 and A80, and a better camera overall. I looked at Kodaks when I was in the market last year, but everything I read said Canon was better. My A80 was $400 last christmas(well the days after), and I've shot over 3000 pictures with it since, 600 of which were on my honeymoon. I personally think the software that came with it could not be better... plug the camera in it asks you to download, it will download to a dated folder(the date the picture was shot). Also if you have an external reader(I have one for my CF cards), when you plug the card in the same software activated. If you ahve some specific questions about it I can see what I can do, plug I have tons of pictures that I can send you in a variety of settings(day, night, indoors, outdoors, etc) so you can see for yourself. Bear in mind that I'm not a professional, but this camera is truly amazing, it makes my wife look like a pro and all she does is point and shoot.
On a side note... Does anyone know of any classes that allow you to use a digital camera vs a standard SLR? I'd like to send my wife(and maybe myself) to one to learn more about photography. Most of the ones around here require a 35mm SLR.

Woah, just took this now, I never knew this camera was so sensative to light...

Hey, that's cool. I like the shadows.
Kind of looks like you have an EMP or a flashbang or something going off in your house.
I'm going to D.C. soon (labor day weekend-Sept 4 - 6). Will try to take some 'postworthy' pics with the new A75 you all talked me into. Gotta tell you, though--I'm not half the photographer the rest of you are. I know about f stops and ISO, etc in theory, but not so much in practice.
These were taken with an Apple QuickTime camera back in 96/97. Pictures are as they came off the camera. It's amazing how fast technology changes.
The boat is the "HMS" Rose - an American owned, Canadian built replica of a 24 gun British frigate of 1757. Recently the boat was used to film Master & Comander.

Wow...
Your pics are so amazing, I really like them.
But since we are all showing pics.
Here are two of my happiest & exciting moments

http://img59.exs.cx/img59/7536/DSCF139.jpg
I took them with my Fujifilm Digital Camera 5MP.
The quality isn't very good, nor is the actually picture as nice as any of yours.
But I love these cars, and it was fun for me to spend a day with them!
Here's some pics I took when I went to Chicago back in May. Both pictures were taken with a borrowed HP Photosmart 612 camera. Not too bad for an older camera. :)
