Wireless or Direct Connection

Recently moved into my dads house and want to share his internet connection (cable) with my computer in the other room. Now I have been told by a friend that it would be a better idea to just have my own cable connection put in because wireless is slower. I've read through the guides but didnt find too much on wireless. Any advice is appreciated.

Wireless would be perfectly fine because its still gonna be a LOT faster than the cable modem. You could always get a router and run Cat5 to each computer or a wirelss AP and a wireless card for you PC. There's many ways to do it, and none will be a problem for making the internet access slow.

How would it be much faster than cable? Wouldn't I be sharing the cable connection on the main computer, if anything it would be slower.

wireless is slower at transfering files on the lan. when it comes to the internet tho it wont make a diff. wired lan can transfer at 100mbits/sec, wireless 802.11b can transfer at 11mbits/sec, and 802.11g an transfer at 54mbits/ sec. youd be lucky to get a broadband internet connection that was over 3mbits/sec, far from the limits of any lan setup.

Whats the difference between a wireless router and wireless ap? Also, my motherboard has to be wireless compatible correct? Could you reccomend what brand to buy or will generic work fine?

A wireless router and a wireless pci card for your computer.


You want the wireless router because it will sit in between your cable/DSL modem and your network. The AP is not a router but just a wireless access point and is usually more expensive. The wireless PCI card should work in any motherboard with a PCI slot.
