Durons and DDR ram

Well I have been gone a while... I had a MAJOR meltdown while water- cooling my KT7A-RAID. The bad news is that my KT7A-RAID is toast and I can't get warranty due to some serious mods I did to the board. The good news is that I am now looking at getting the KG7-RAID. It’s currently back ordered from my supplier but should be here within the week.

While I wait for my board to arrive I was reading up about it over at VIA hardware. They mentioned that you must use PC1600 with 100fsb cpus and 2100 with 133fsp cpus.

I couldn’t afford a new Athlon and besides I want to wait for a Palomino. At any rate I have my trusty duron 750 which I like to run at 7 x 133 for a nice speed of 933mhz.

My question is can I use my PC2100 with my Duron chip so long as I keep the FSB at 133+mhz?

Yeah. I have seen a setup like this before Duron with DDR. the only thing is the cpu will the bottle neck.

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I may very well be), but I believe you can run PC2100 with a Duron @ 100 FSB. I would think that what would happen is the memory would run at 100 instead of 133. I ran a Duron 750 in my system (see sig) for a little while and I had no problems at 100 FSB (except I had to turn down the detail levels on my games...lol)

Wellcome back! Sorry to hear about the fried board :( BTW my system with the freezer is still going strong, no leaks or condensation problems after all this time. Go with the PC2100 as the faster ram will clock down if you need it to but the slow ram will not clock up. The KG7 does look like one sweet board and I have been eyeing it up. I just can't justify it right now as I get some great memory scores on the KT7A-R at 155fsb turbo settings but maybe soon when cpu's can hit the 2 gig mark.

PC2100 cas2.5 is the same thing as PC1600cas2 so you will be fine!

I recently picked up a Duron950, and another 1.4 Ayhja (my 3rd). Both run fine on my epox w DDR. the duron will go to 9.5 x 123 (I started at 100), and the bird will fly alot higher ofcourse. I haven't had any problems with my 512mb stick of Nanya DDR.

You should have no problem running PC2100 at 100 fsb..... but then again, why would you want to. In general, RAM chips with different speed ratings are not physically different, and a chip rated for an XXX speed memory bus should run OK at that speed and at any slower speed.

Thanks for the reply's. I'm glad to hear that I should have no problem using my Duron. I didn't want to be forced to buy pc1600 ram or an Athlon at this time. Looks like I will be able to save my pennies for a Palomino...
